OK, How do I post a picture to a thread?

Need some help in finding your way around TDF? Want to know the short cuts? BBCode support? Using images in your posts? It's all here.

just explained things on an other thread, so I'll put it here as well

for images and websites, there are even three ways how to do it :
for example, if you want to link to a picture or the whole album of the crazy doll ( that's me )

<B>with websites</B> like my album ( .htm or .html or .php? ) :
the correct hotmail programming is a Hypertext REFerence ( HREF ) :

Code: Select all

<A HREF="http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/index.php?cat=10049">click here</A>
with this forum, you can also use the version

Code: Select all

[url]http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/index.php?cat=10049[/url]
however, I wonder why, but even just giving the picture URL works ( at least with me )

Code: Select all

http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/index.php?cat=10049

<B>with images</B> ( .jpg .gif and so on )
the correct hotmail programming is an IMaGe SouRCe ( IMG SRC ) :

Code: Select all

<IMG SRC="http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/albums/userpics/10049/thumb_Vanessa_Realdoll_0030.jpg">
with this forum you can also use

Code: Select all

[img]"http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/albums/userpics/10049/thumb_Vanessa_Realdoll_0030.jpg">[/img]
and again I wonder why, but even the picture URL alone works with me :

Code: Select all

http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/albums/userpics/10049/thumb_Vanessa_Realdoll_0030.jpg

if you want to combine this to a <B>picture link</B>, insert the picture URL where it says "click here" in first the example above, like

Code: Select all

<A HREF="http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/index.php?cat=10049" TARGET="_blank"><IMG SRC="http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/albums/userpics/10049/thumb_Vanessa_Realdoll_0030.jpg"></A>
( with TARGET="_blank" causing the browser to open a new browser window )

like this :

<A HREF="http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/in ... ?cat=10049" TARGET="_blank"><IMG SRC="http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/al ... 0.jpg"></A>

[EDIT]
If just giving the URL of a picture or website alone works (neither [img] or <IMG SRC.... in use) seems to depend on the version of forum software in use, right now it doesn't work for me... so better use a correct string version... also, with some versions of forum software, hotmail (html) is only switched on when you are logged in, so best bet would be to use the forum versions [img] and [url]

This information is very helpful and detailed, unfortunately it's not sinking in completely. I'd like a place to practice without cluttering up a forum where it would be inappropriate.

Is there a forum where members can just post test messages to try out these tips and suggestions before we actually attempt it in an actual forum?
See Sara-Nikita's albums here http://www.dollalbum.com/dollgallery/index.php?cat=11140

Huh, what language are you guys speaking? I have an A.S. in Computer Science and I will really have to read and reread all those directions in order to understand them.

Of course, I can't figure out a cell phone or iPod either. But I didn't have so much trouble posting pictures to Craig's List. You just put your pixs into a file and on the Craig's List end you just hit browse and go to that file and select a picture. Even I could do it.

I will have to learn this method so I can post some pixs of my lifting contraption I have put together. I better copy all this text over to a Word file so I can do some studying.

Maybe all this brain effort will help prevent Alzheimer's in my old brain.

Possibly, this thread will be of help:

http://www.dollforum.com/forum/viewtopi ... ic&t=18798

It has a video showing how to put a picture in a post.

If you want to practice, you can just use the "preview" button in the "New post" screen.

It will show you how your post will look when you submit it, without actually submitting something.

Congratulations! You have managed to make this about as complex and annoying as you can. I guess whoever came up with this routine works for the Government and truly has all day since the taxpayers are paying you to be obtuse!

It's hardly rocket science...

paste a jpg link, highlight it, press the IMG button... done.

Okay, I think I see the problem. Alex, your instructional video shows you making a copy of a picture from your gallery here on the forum and then pasting it into a post. It seems to be the same with Vanessa's instructions. She is copying from a doll album and pasting into a post. So, sure, you can just copy and paste the URL and everything will work.

What Dollwacker and I want to know - in the simplest terms possible - is how to take a picture that is on our computer hard-drive and put it into a thread. I have been trying to copy a picture from my computer and put it into a post but nothing works so far.

Do I first have to setup a gallery in the Member's section or is it possible to copy a picture from a file on my PC and paste it into a post? Do I have to insert the picture into a Word document first?

I didn't have any problems putting pictures into my Craig's List ad. There must be something I am overlooking here.

Brother Dollwacker and Brother Wondering can see that most of the helpful hints are being spoken in tongues. Unfortunately, we are lacking so we can't interpret what is being said.

So, please, pretend you are explaining to a five year old.

It looks like everyone has gone to bed. So, I started playing around in the "Member Gallery" section and actually created an album (Wondering-Natalie).

From there, it should be relatively easy for Dollwacker to copy the pixs over to a posting or just copy the link to the album into a posting.

Now that I know how to create an album, I can make one for Wondering-COM doll and Wondering-RealDoll. Cool.

I wonder if I should have created my album under the 1st-PC section (if that would be possible). Then, other members could see a variety of pixs of Natalie other than what is already there.

Okay, that's the problem then...

one step further back : You cannot embed content from your hard drive into posts. A file must be uploaded to an internet server before, your own computer doesn't work for that. A server needs other operating parts installed than a home PC, and unlike when you switch your home computer off, a server is permanently online (unless reboot or crash).

An internet server, that can be the doll album or the member gallery (forum server). In that case, you upload the picture to the dollforum server in Amsterdam, and from there, you grab the picture URL to put it in the post. So you need a http:/www......whatever....picture.jpg URL and anything wich C:\....... is just not uploaded anywhere. Instead of the forum server, you can also use whatever free account offering webspace, like gmx, freenet, lycos or many more, or photo services like photobucket or stuff. You then upload, grab the URL, and embed it with [img].....[/img]

Next step happening is that your browser (special internet software) loads the requested file from the server while loading the post, where the picture is embedded. Internet websites are the result of a source code programming, mostly Hotmail, JavaScript, Pearl, PHP (especially forums), StyleSheet, probably more internet-related computer languages around. The browser interpretes the programming to render what you finally see on your screen. A browser works for all kind of hypertext files. [a hypertext is a text producing what you see on the screen, and http stands for "hypertext transfer protocol] So a browser only works for .htm, .html and .php files, but for those, a browser is needed. There can be pictures embedded, that's .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .bmp and others (mostly .jpg because of using less file size). Document styles not created for browser interpretation 99% shouldn't work. I never tried to upload a Word document and then try to open the .doc file with a browser, but it shouldn't work. While .htm is programmed for a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera,...), a Word Doc is saved for Microsoft Word.

So what you do is :
1) upload file to an internet server or free service [also just a server...]
2) grab URL there
3) embed picture in your post, submit (what this thread is about)
4) refresh thread to make your browser see what you just did
5) :D

so, we learnt 2 things :
1) a home computer is not an internet server, you need to upload your file
2) every internet website exists in 2 versions
- what your eyes see on the sceen (browser interpretation of the source code)
- the source code programming in some computer language
(try right click, and in the menu appearing, try "open source code" or whatever it may be in English... you then see the programming code of this dollforum site with this thread) :-P

Yup, that is what I thought. So, I created a Member's Gallery first and now the pictures can be copied over to a thread. I haven't tried copying pixs into a posting yet.

What spoiled me was putting pictures into my Craig's List ad. On Craig's List, you can upload pictures directly from our hard drive into the ad.

Now that I think of it - if we can upload pictures from our hard drive into a member's album why can't we upload pictures directly into a post?

That would probably require a complete rewriting of the software that creates a posting, wouldn't it? Couldn't one of the more knowledgeable members or moderators create a subroutine that would allow that?

On Star Trek, they add, delete and change subroutines all the time in only a few minutes. Where is Seven of Nine when you need her?

Vanessa, Thank you for explaining the procedure for post pics. Only having a computer for a couple of months now, it still is very confusing to me. Its simple for most here. When I finally get it, I will say, damn that was not so hard. But in the meantime I will keep coursing! 8O

A little tip I would like to add...

Make sure that when you highlight your URL (address)
of your pic, make sure that you get ALLof the
URL (address) highlighted!! I was getting very frustrated
when I tried to place my first pic into a topic because it
seemed liked I was doing everything right, but finally
found out that the URL (address) of the pic had a hidden
third line that I missed highlighting!! :? When you go to
highlight your URL (address) of your pic, go across and
also pull down slightly on your mouse to get all of the
URL (address) highlighted and then Right-Click and click
"Copy" to save your Pic's URL (address)...

Take care!! litlluvr & Yoshe.

Sadly, rewriting forum software in such a manner isn't as easy as they show on sci-fi series.

It would probably need to be rewritten completely.

Some websites have that ability to upload directly into a post, but most do not.

But still, even when you upload, it is stored somewhere, not just in that thread. The picture itself is stored on some server computer on the internet.

Advantage of the Member Gallery, when you remove a picture there, it's really gone, when uploading into a thread directly, you never know where that pic is stored, and if it is really removed when you remove the post.

Methinks this thread is way out of date and no longer accurate?
Now photos can indeed be uploaded directly from one's hard drive.
I can even upload a video from my hard drive! I tried it, and it works!
I need to avoid both TDF and chocolate candy, for similar reasons.

If you want to copy a picture from an album running Firefox, you can right click to the side of the picture, select "view page info" (or just press ctl+i). In that window, you select the media tab, then scroll to the jpg image you want to copy; then, click "copy". That's also good for just copying the link of the jpg file. To the right of "Location" the link information shows.

Never mind the ctl+i. That doesn't work on my old windows.

I just tried it for fun.

That's cool the way that anti piracy software works. That should stop em.

I am very surprised itsme doesn't show this on his web site. This is a very good picture, Nam. Maybe I just missed it.
