Re: What do you think creates the taboo about dolls?
I don't see that adults having dolls should bear any shame. It's unusual but harmless. People have an instinct to be social. If we did not, out species would not have survived as long as it has. It's hard wired into the workings of the human mind. Different people have dolls for very specific reasons. They vary from enjoying art, fashion, companionship, a transitional object and sexual release.
For myself, I do not keep my doll secret nor do I have shame. That doesn't mean I share with anyone and everyone. I'm not embarrassed, but some of my family members might feel that way. I've very proud of my dolls. My family has seen Jeff and my bf helped me by carrying him into my house and up the stairs. I like having my big doll around because unlike my smaller dolls, Jeff has a presence that keeps me from feeling scared about being alone, because it feels less lonely. My smaller dolls are very handsome and easily customized to my liking. I imagine my dolls each have their own personality and identity. To me, my dolls are like little people and my friends to the kid part of me that will never 'grow up'. I really enjoy owning man dolls. I like the way they look as I have no interest in female forms or faces. To me, Jeff the Real Doll, is the king among all of my collection.

That pretty much sums up the general public`s opinion of doll owners.

This is exactly how I pictured a doll owner from his looks to his body language says that he loves sex dolls...LOLOttobaby wrote:It's pretty simple, actually. Imagine a guy, coming home to a piece of plastic, or TPE or silicone for that matter, probably alone with little to no contact to other humans, living in a not so pleasant environment, chances are he is not very successful in what he does for a living, not the most attractive or well groomed kind, never making eye contact with women and totally and utterly intimidated by the female. Said guy then grabs mentioned piece of plastic, or TPE or silicon, throws his out of shape body on top of it, humps it for 3 - 5 minutes, finishes his business and goes back to watching weirdo porn on his computer. And the real creepy ones start talking to said piece of plastic, giving it names, putting rings on its fingers and pretending its real. The kind of guy you want your 7 year old daughter to play with because he likes dolls as much as she does. Or, since a pic says more than a thousand words, please see pic of average doll owner below.

Re: What do you think creates the taboo about dolls?
You know, answering my own question, I suppose that there are ways that it is better and ways that it is worse, I am under no illusions that I have a real and proper 'girlfriend' - I am fully aware that they are not 'real' but they are certainly a nice distraction from the pain of broken relationships and definitely help to minimize the pain and feeling of loss but overall you've decided it's better? For me personally they are somewhere in between a GOOD relationship and a POOR relationship with a real-life lady. If I think back to the 10-12 really good relationships where the friendship, companionship (and sex) were all good, then quite frankly, the doll is quite a poor substitute. However, if I go to the other end of the scale and look back at some of the 'train wreck' relationships where the woman was either stupid, crazy, mental or crap in bed, then the dolls are certainly more fun then those relationships. So basically for me, the pseudo-relationship I have formed with the TPE girls is certainly much better (and gives far LESS grief) than a POOR relationship with a human girl... BUT the dolls are nowhere near as satisfying for me than the really good relationships that I have been lucky to have. I have been lucky enough to have experienced many wild girls who have let me film and photograph them so I have experienced amazing times with many real-life women. I can only guess, but for those who have not been fortunate enough to have experienced these wild times with a real-life woman then these dolls must be an absolute God-send. Everyone needs to feel loved and wanted so these dolls are amazing options for many people out there. You tell me!
I wonder if the relationship struggles because it must be kept hidden? (I am assuming you are not public with your doll lifestyle, as I assume most people are here!). Yes things are very strange that I have to keep this part of my life so totally hidden. In a way, there are a handful of people that I would probably like to confide in but the risk of ridicule or other negative consequences is simply far too great to risk telling anyone..... I can just imagine walking into work or out to a sporting event and people looking at me and laughing "Here comes that crazy doll fucker guy".... I don't think the world is really to know about this inner world of ours. I must admit that I would possibly think that it was strange (if I did not already know about it) if a friend of mine told me he was banging sex dolls...
Anyways, it's great to hear how supportive this community has been. Yes the community has been great. By meeting people on TDF and hearing their stories I can see a wide range of people and backgrounds and it helps to make you feel like you are OK and not some type of weirdo. Without the TDF community I worry that I might feel strange about my doll companions but with community support I realize that I am just a normal guy with a very interesting and very stimulating hobby. BEST HOBBY IN THE WORLD!Thanks for the response!

I don't buy into all this red pill mgtow bullshit, because that is just more propaganda brainwashing. The truth is, like it or not guys, that if women were the ones with the incessant, over-active libido, gotta fuck 2-3 times a day issue, we men would be taking full advantage of that, just like women are right now. Can you blame them? Do you REALLY think we'd be any different? Of course not. It is basic human nature. Deal with it. It's not a conspiracy. It's a fucking fact of life.
Dolls give men an alternative to the norm of women controlling 100% of the pussy. It's no wonder they are against it. Once this goes mainstream, they've lost control of sex, something they've enjoyed for eons. A paradigm shift. And don't think for one second that we men would be any different if the roles were reversed.

Thank you for this response - I really appreciate your insight. I'm glad you are able to keep fairly open about your dolls - as you've said, they can be healthy to have! This is the first I've heard of reborn dolls and I must say the topic intrigues me. I will do more research, but anything you've got to point me in the right direction would be fantastic.violette_22 wrote:Dolls help a lot of people. They've been around for longer than anyone can agree. There's a whole slew of women that have reborn dolls because they have an instinct to care for a baby. Many of these women are past their childbearing years or cannot have children. Yet, they still have those emotional cravings for an infant of their own. It's no different for men to have an instinct to love, care for, protect and enjoy the companionship of a beautiful woman. I think there is more of a taboo about love dolls because male sexuality is not well represented or understood. It's seldom cast in a healthy and positive light. This isn't fair and it needs to stop.

Yeah, it's sad but true. I've (very vaguely) broached this idea of a documentary to people in the mainstream and many have had a similar reaction. Although I will say that I have been pleasantly surprised by some peoples reactions to the idea! I think people are somewhat open to the idea of a new perspective, simply because there is so little information out there.Ottobaby wrote:It's pretty simple, actually. @LJ69: Thank you so much for this answer. I really appreciate your willingness to share with me. It's interesting how you position the doll as a sort of interim - something with benefits and positives that might be altogether different from a human woman. I love how you say: everyone needs to feel loved and wanted. I think that is so true and I'm glad the dolls are a good middle step for you! I'm sorry that the risk of ridicule is so daunting - I think it places a lot of unneeded stress on this community. But I am glad that TDF has been helpful in that regard!
@Begog: That's true! I am finding that even within this already underrepresented community, women doll owners are underrepresented as well! I'd be in interested in the statistics of doll ownership in terms of sexual orientation and identity as well! I hope with the general trend towards tolerance towards different sexualities our society is experiencing, doll ownership becomes a valid and accepted one, even if a bit rare or unusual.
@Kcupusay: I just saw that case in the news as well - its a shame cases like those are brought to life. There is an interesting argument that dolls can help control those urges for those who know it is wrong but still feel the desire, although I am not nearly knowledgable enough to weigh in on that (and its a separate argument). Maybe for some other filmmaker!
Thank you again everyone for your wonderful responses!

So they are becoming less and less of a taboo every day.
Hypocrisy at an incredible level.
Jealousy is a little bit part of it I think as well.
I used to feel weird about owning a collection of dolls.
But my wife playing with them really helped to change that perspective.
All I know is my main counterfeit 140 has been giving me the most incredible orgasams I have ever had.
So I can care less what others think.
The Amish really frown on technology.
And prudes frown on masturbation.
So really nothing has changed.

Sex toys in general are taboo in the sense that we don't leave them lying around for others to find.
Agalmatophilia (statue love) is often considered a disorder.
One thought that went through my mind when I ordered my sex doll is that I wanted to be ready for the day when androids do become available for sale. I wanted a point of reference.
Imagine how disappointed I would be to find that my TPE RLSD was "bettter" than the new "fully functional" androids.
