Successful WM TPE head transplant to DS 163 body

Found a really pretty 140 WM head with closed eyes in the FOR SALE section and took a chance it would adapt to a DS body. I removed the mounting mechanism from a spare DS head and drilled out the "screw on" nut from the WM head. I had to widen the hole slightly for the DS mechanism to fit. Also when I got inside the WM head I realized it had a fiberglass canal that houses the oral function. Since I wanted to put the hanger through the head, I also had to drill holes in both sides of the canal and the top of the skull. Since doing that the oral function is void but it does all the things the DS head does. You might ask, why I would want to do this. The WM head is made of TPE, and while I would not want an entire doll made of this stuff, it is extremely soft and kissable. The mouth is larger than DS doll heads and the lips feel very realistic. I am posting a few pics of the finished product and am totally pleased with the result though the colors are not exact, they are quite close.

The colors are indeed quite close!

Hopefully the TPE doesn't melt the silicone or vice-versa.

they barely touch except on outside edge of neck, but I will be monitoring it closely. I don't expect any problem.

I also wanted that closed eye face. It is one of my favorites.
Looks great on a DS body to me.

Perhaps for safety you might cut a polythene disc as a barrier between the two materials and if the right size would not be seen at all

Nice work! I agree that particular head is very nice for kissing and it is not just because it is TPE, it is because of the open mouth. I have one for my WM doll and I prefer it over the head #36 I got originally. I actually think the DS "Kathy" head might have a larger and more open mouth, but it is not nearly as nice to kiss.

I'd appreciate a tutorial on how you did this conversion.

Does the head need force to remove like a DS head? Will it fall off easily or spin around/wobble?
Are you saying you needed a spare DS head to make it work? I'm interested in a way that preserves the oral function of the WM. Unless it is too small and not worth it??

Because I transplanted the DS mounting mechanism from another DS head, it works the same as DS head. It clicks into place and remains secure. The oral function can not be preserved because of its direction through the head. The mechanism can be ordered from DS, and I will next time I need something from them, shipping costs from them made it impractical when I have several spare heads. I can restore the DS head later.

First off

Secondly @ TheIQF++ you might want to at least take a look into this thread:

The goal in making the adapters was to have a destruction-free way of putting a head on a different body, so the WM head will retain its oral function.
That said - the way heads are attached to DS bodies is such that the head is allowed to spin pretty freely on the neck post - so I am not sure it will hold its position good enough and also not sure if the connection would be strong enough for that sort of use - you'd have to try.
Also note that Ddwyerstar by using the large DS doll heads connector needed to destroy the oral capacity but also gained the ability to actually have the doll still hanged using the DS posing wire kit - something that would not be possible with the adapters mentioned above and without an upward hole through the head.

To me it was a successful transplant because I have no interest in oral on this head, this head is for kissing. I have an oral head also from DS. Interesting chart though, someone had access to all those dolls, amazing in itself!

What causes them to melt on contact? So if someone dries their TPE doll with an air pump using silicone tubing it will cause damage? Does anyone have a link on why that happens?

Just to make sure there is no misunderstanding left here - I also evaluated this as a successful endeavor and congratulated you on a job very well done.
Your fantastic pictures of the Sakura/Ying head on the 163 are among my current favorites for sure and I'll be watching for pictures of this new unforeseen combo - the first ones sure look nice.

Following ones inspiration and dreams and creating a hybrid to get there deserves full respect in my humble opinion.
So here's to you having no issues with her and a long happy time together.
