Yikes, that is one large surprise shipping bill!

I agree a local vendor would be awesome. The whole international delivery + customs stuff is super stressful. It would be nice if they had someone local that handled all that and made sure she at least arrived in the US safe and sound.

The information I've gathered is that different folks are paying different amounts. It'd be a good idea to collect information to see what causes the insane disparity.

In the US, avoiding the port of Louisville Kentucky is a very good idea. All dolls seized and reported on official forfeiture documentation arrived at that port.

The search of "sex doll" still renders four dolls, so the count hasn't changed since 12 August 2016. I occasionally check.

Doc, I ordered directly from DS in China to the continental US. The only separate fee I paid was $35 USD to DHL. The bill arrived in mail a week after delivery. Simple and affordable.

There have been other threads on customs charges so have a search on 'customs' maybe. One reason for different charges is the value put on the package. If what you paid for the doll is on there, the charges will be the percentage charge that your country has in import tax etc. In the UK it's 20% VAT (value added tax). So, what some mfrs do is put a lower value on the package so for you, as a customer, import tax is lower. What the customs sometimes do is look at a package that has a low value for a heavy weight and stick their own charges on it! The danger with putting a lower value on the package is that if the carrier 'damages' the package and contents, they are responsible only for the value put on the package! Hence getting your money back is sometimes a nightmare!

We have never paid any "extra" for our shipmnts directly from DS. They were delivered by DHL with no additional fees incurred.

Same here, from John in China with 36.00 customs bill a couple of weeks later. I'm in Florida

Personally, I always preferred to deal with a company with a US vendor. Just less chance of problems developing. Which I'm sure will be a nightmare trying to deal with on an international level. But I do wish DS had a US vendor as I fell in love with the new 170 body.
