Re: A few questions about proper care of DS

It would be great to hear from luckyleaf on the NEVER use soap statement..... I can see this for repairs, but for regular cleaning??? I plan on applying makeup, and from what I have read I need to use powdered blush, eye shadow...never liquid, waterproof lipstick applied with a brush, and eyeliner pencils. Any other tips on make up? I will obviously wash any clothes multiple times before use, but I thought silicone was much more immune to transfer staining than TPE which is much more porous. Is this incorrect?

I washed new black lingerie only once and they did cause staining in spots where they were pressed against the silicone for longer periods of time (mostly back and buttocks because she was laying on bed + legs because tight stockings), but stains disappeared within a week without me doing anything about them. So personally I don't worry about it :D

You can stain any kind of doll even fabric and vinyl.

I even use dark powder for eyeliner and powder on her lips too. I avoid oil based makeup on silicone dolls.

I have had mine for over a year now. Here are some tips I learned over using My dsdoll 160+:

Hang her for storage if you can. Lying down in one position can compress the silicone or cause rub marks
If you lie her down on the floor for a long time dont have her arch her back as that puts a lot of stress on the butt and shoulder.
On the bed when stored for a long time, move her to lie in the sides then back and alternate so she doesnt wear out one side.
Dont have dark clothing on her for many many hours. Stains show overnight. Pink and yellow and white are ok. Washing the clothes will help but it takes many many washes.
When putting in the insert be careful mot to pull the sides of the dolls hole as it will tear over many uses
Dolls cant stand on their own
Dont arch the back and store her that way since it puts stress on the doll
When storing put the doll joints in the natural positions to reduce material stress
Fingers get damaged very easily. The silicone on the feet and hands can tear since theyre thin.
Fishnet stockings or tight clothing can leave permanent indentations on the silicone skin if left for a very long time and is worse with more pressure.
You need to let a new doll air out to remove the new silicone odor. Takes a few weeks and largely disappears after several months
I wash my doll with warm water and Dove soap
Watch your nails as long nails will scrape or puncture silicone
Do not use towels to scrub the doll as it will damage the silicone
Do not use alcohol or acetone to clean
Do not scrub her face when cleaning
Do not get the metal parts wet due to rust

Thanks for the feedback! This is invaluable for a first time owner. I ordered my doll sans makeup, so I could apply and change it frequently. I believe I had read somewhere here that Ponds makeup remover was okay to remove makeup, is this correct? Since I have zero experience with makeup I do not know if it will clean off with just water/soap. Are dark clothes that have been washed multiple times okay for photo sessions? I'm not a chemist, but I had always thought that silicone was fairly inert, and if anything, it would tend to out gas as opposed to being absorbent. Yeah, I do tend to be a bit of a science geek!

Wow, wow guys! This stupid soap! Sorry, I didn't want to irritate you.

Depending on which soap you want to use, remember it's general chemical with several substances. I have washed Miahs feets and got some strange frictions after some hours. Maybe it wasn't the soap but I have decided to not to use soap anymore. I always use acetone for cleaning and Miahs skin is still wonderful and unscathed without any damages, scratches or frictions. I always use baby powder afterwards. Perfect! Just my experience.

No irritation luckyleaf, just a bit of confusion. I know that the DS web site recommends mild soap for cleaning. Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it!. I guess I am a little overly concerned since this will be my first doll.

I can understand that. You don't want to make a mistake and give your first doll the best possible care. I shouldn't have used the term "never" only because of my experiences. Sorry for that.
Probably you can use a mild liquid soap for cleaning depending on how often you wash your doll.

Please, let us know when your doll arrives.

For what it's worth, I like to use Cetaphil facial soap on my lady when giving her showers. Its the epitome of a mild soap, as it's meant to be used on one's face without leaving it too dry. I wash her with that soap, using only my hands, and it cleans off all the lint and other various types of dirt that she may have accumulated since her last shower. She comes out nice and clean after that. That's just my two cents.

I bet if we were smart we would post a question on a Special FX forum (where they do silicone prosthetic appliances). I bet you the PH-level of the soap makes a big difference. For that matter, so does the water. For instance, distilled water is very acidic (etc etc etc) .. the Cetaphil soap idea made me think of that.
