Any special tips for repairing MLD?

Post by PinkPupa »

I just bought a used MLD with damage to the wrists and ankles. I'm getting ready to order a repair kit from Abyss and was wondering if there are any special tips for repairing MLD's compared to full size dolls. I suspect since MLD's are high-quality, platinum cure silicone that silpoxy should work just as well as with other dolls but want to be sure I get this right.

Anyone have the experience of how much silpoxy you need to fix quarter sized tears/holes at both wrists and both ankles?
The kit comes with two 1/2 oz. foil pouches of silpoxy but more can be ordered if needed.

Order as much Silpoxy as you need from Smooth-on Products.
Also order Psycho Paint and the Silc Pig pigment sampler set, along with the special thinner that gives a matte finish to the final product.
Blend the pigments until you match the skin tone, add them to the Psycho Paint with the thinner, and have at it!
That should do you quite well.

I had ordered the repair kit from Abyss. Is that a problem?

The abyss repair kit is meant for their dolls but i'm sure it can be used for other dolls as well. I use the abyss repair kit all the time on my angel and would love to help. Post some pics of the damage and ill do my best to help.

Photos of the anomalies will help. Do the legs wobble?

Sil-poxy is the recommended adhesive.

The REPAIR adhesive offered by Abyss I believe IS SilPoxy repackaged. I used SP on my Virgin Rose Doll when I needed to fix her elbow and it stuck fine.

Abyss called today to verify my request for dark nipples in the lip/nipple/nail kit and I asked about Silpoxy. They said it was the same but a different package. I plan to fix a minor spot and see how it works before I move to something big.

So my girl arrived today and the damage is worse than I thought. Her head was a bit askew when I lifted her out of the box and when I sat her on the table her head dangled over the edge and fell off.

A white plastic "spine" is left on her neck. I assume I'll have to coat this with Silpoxy to glue the head back on. Any other ideas?

Next, her ankle is deeper than I thought. Two wire "foot bones" attach to sockets in the "ankle bone (plastic)". I was thinking Epoxy would work to re-attach the "bones" before I use silpoxy on the "Skin".

So, silpoxy for sticking the head back on and epoxy on the plastic and wires before the silpoxy is applied.

Good idea? Suggestions if not a good idea?

Bit difficult. Have you talked to Adam yet? The mf should know the best way to repair as he knows the materials.
Silpoxy is meant to fuse silicone to silicone. I thought the head screwed on? Is it broken of below that point?
Regarding the ankle, epoxy could work, depends on the materials. can you see what those are? are those wires glued in or broken of at that point?

I've sent a PM to the mfr and figured out how to upload the "spine" image. Yes, the head does screw on, but it looks like someone screwed her head off (couldn't resist). Actually, it looks like the silicone stopped sticking to the "spine" which attaches the head to the screw and eventually slipped off. There are holes in the spine that looks like the silicone is supposed to fill to attach, since it won't stick to the plastic. The wires are wires with insulating material and the socket is apparently plastic. I don't see glue residue so I thought the wires just fit into the sockets and were supposed to be held in place by the silicone of the doll.

You're right, it looks as though the holes are for retention. It would probably be a b*tch to do, but try to get silpoxy all the way in the hole in the head, and try to align the holes as much as possible with the silicone so it can bond again.

Looks like the wire goes all the way through the leg, is the white plastic on both sides or just on one? If its one one, you can use epoxy, otherwise the stuff its made from. i think its a commonly used urethane, but the mf wil probably fill you in on this if you ask.

(So yeah, this is basically what you figured out yourself)

The resin piece that goes on the head is called the skull. Silicone adhesive works well to hold that in. Just spread silicone in the head piece and press the skull to that for a couple of minutes. That will need to sit at least over night, so the silicone adhesive has time to cure. Setting it so that there's something pressing the skull towards the head doesn't hurt.

The fail-safe feature is intended to help keep the foot wire from getting pulled out of the ankle. That is, the ankle is supposed to pull out of the shin instead of the wires pulling out of the ankle; then, in such a case, placing the ankle bone into the shin would make for an unobtrusive repair. Apparently, on yours, the wires pulled out. If the wires aren't broken, there's no reason not to use an adhesive to keep them placed. A foot wire piece only needs to look right. Some have simply removed them.

Does the ankle bone pull out of the shin bone socket? I'm just curious about this one. It is supposed to, but it's not an issue if it doesn't.

The holes on the skull are there to render silicone adhesive access to air so that the glue can cure. That's another one that just needs to look right.
笑. It's good for you.

All four wrists/ankles have the wires loose (out of the socket) like the photo. Repair kit won't get here till Tuesday.

Repairs are done. I epoxied the wires into the bones and let them sit overnight. The glue held firmly so I used the Abyss silpoxy to fix the limbs and allowed them to sit overnight. It flexes without separating, but the worse joint looks scarred, though it still holds. Then I put the flesh tone silicone over the wounds. It took about 48 hours to dry till it wasn't tacky. Some wounds look good, the others still look a little scarred, but it beats the heck out of the shredded appearance in the photo above. Photos of the completed project under the thread "Ms. Elsa McNeil".
