Chat...

Post by Phreddie »

So I didn't move the chat server over, and I'm debating on moving it, re-writing it, or looking for another. The main issue is that it runs on Java, so a huge overhead on the server. Secondly, it runs on flash on the client side, which is also becoming a pain. We've also had problems with it in the past.
With HTML5, and things like jquery and ajax, writing web chat applications has become much easier. So I'll either write one, or we'll find another good one out there (or stick with 123flashchat).

But for now, I'm going to bed.. even tho its only 2am.

Personally, given all the security vulnerabilities in Flash I would like to see a change. I don't participate in chat for the very reason that it runs on Flash. As a big Google exec recently said, it is time for Adobe to give up on flash and let it die. Plus there are tablets and phones out there that have no native flash support such as the Kindles, and Crapple products also don't run flash very well either as they are trying to force the change away from flash as well.

I personally think it would be in our best interests to make the change now while we are moving the server. Seems like the perfect time to do it.

I was looking at ProChatRooms: http://prochatrooms.com/ but they do not offer a trial version (other than the demo on their website), so cannot test locally before purchase, but it SOUNDS promising; has a voice/video option, works with mobile devices, etc..

Flash still has its uses, just not anything web-based due to security issues. It's still pretty good for vector animation, both amateurs and seasoned animators. Can just convert the SWF into a standard video format. But yeah, Shockwave objects and players are soooo 1990's. While we're at it, I think Silverlight needs to go too, as it was built up to be a direct competitor to Flash, but it kind of ...deflated. Also, web-based Java apps should go as well. There's really no reason for Java to be running via web applets what with JS and Server-Side scripting languages not only being more than capable of web application development, but also more secure from a client-side perspective. Problem is there's so many apps that still run it. Amazon Web Services, for example, would need a complete rewrite. Not that they couldn't do it..., I mean, it's Amazon...

How about IRC? Lots of networks out there that will host a channel for free. Lots of native, flash, java, whatever type you want IRC clients..

And no stupid 'idle timeout' every 15 minutes.. Along with such wonderful features like 'ignore'

We could easily setup our own IRC server, but last I tried looking, there were very limited web-based IRC clients that were worth a darn. Plus, a few of the features we used in 123flashchat were the posting of images directly, and voicechat, which I dont think you can do in IRC.

New Chat

Post by TDF_Management »

Hi All,

Sorry for the downtime on chat. However we have some good news for you, we purchased ProChatRooms: http://prochatrooms.com/ as recommended by Phreddie. The new chat will do all that the old flash 123 did and more, as this will also have support for mobile devices and even allow embedding of YouTub vids.

This new chat room has been installed but needs configuring before use. Hopefully the chat will be up and running by next weekend.

Again, sorry for this inconvenience, but it will be worth it

The voice chat was a god damn nightmare. You couldn't mute chat beep sounds and still listen to people. The chat beep sounds gave me a migraine in about 5 minutes flat, Didn't help that I could hear them echoing through whoever was using voice chat (only about 1 person who used chat ever used voice chat and I wish he wouldn't as I would just have to mute him or get a migraine)

Plus I had to turn it up so high just to hear the person clearly the chat sounds where extremely loud and annoying, even if they didn't cause migraines.

I REALLY don't want voice chat support. It made me feel excluded from the conversation whenever anyone used it as I would have to turn it off. I wonder how many older members of this forum have bad hearing?

The picture support was cute, but very annoying when the chat scroll would make them disappear so quickly, and more annoying when it could crop the head off half the photos I uploaded (Anything laying down). Saying that people couldn't save the images or that it was private is wrong, since anyone could easily hit print screen and save a screenshot of the images.

Also annoying that you couldn't close a picture after you open it, just had to sit there hoping people would type enough to scroll it off your screen. Real lovely when someone posted pictures of gross things (Like a doll with a neck snapped at 90 degrees sideways like tootsie did just about every single day) or other doll gore pictures...

Heaven forbid you try to scroll or do anything while 'loading picture' since every update of the % would jump you back to that line.

I REALLY wish we just had an IRC chat room. wanna post pictures? post a link to imgur. wanna post youtube videos? Post a link to youtube.. its really simple and very much not prone to the security/performance nightmare that is flash.

Plus with IRC you actually have a choice in clients. Every single 'flash' chat room only has one client, Its client. And they are all ugly and non conformant to whatever OS's GUI you are using at the time. I doubt there is a cellphone/OS used by more then 1% of the people on earth that does not have its own IRC client or two.

... Great, Another flash monster.

Ever checked how many major exploits that thing has had?
https://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/34275/
http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/31463/exploit
Google: prochatrooms exploits: About 1,120 results
Wonder how many are left undocumented...
found that version 8.2.0 of ProChatRoom was vulnerable to stored cross-site scripting (XSS), reflected XSS, SQL injection and ultimately to remote command execution by combining the stored XSS with SQL injection.
I sure as hell hope that thing is not sharing the same SQL database as the forum, unless you want every post to be changed to 'Buy viagra now!' spam by random forum exploit bots. Mind you this would likely be a really good forum to advertise that on, given how many older doll owners we have around here.. :P

DarkOne, I understand your frustrations, its definitely one of those "cant please everyone" things. The issue that people have told me in the past with IRC is that people have to install a separate app, and alot of people just dont want to deal with trying to find a decent IRC app, theres a handfull out there, and alot actually have too many features for the first time user. Thats why I was looking for a simple web-based one. If this new chat is as annoying as you've said with the silly beeps, unwanted pics, etc, It is feasible to write an IRC bot, have it log on to our own server, and sort of tie the two chats together. Users would have to have a strong desire for that though.
As for the database, I used a separate (dedicated) database and set of creds.

It was expressed to me that voice/video streaming were some of the key things that were needed. Aside from that, I just couldnt find anything decent that was web based and non-flash. Supposedly, the only flash bit in prochat is for streaming.

No it was the old chat that was so damn annoying with beeping in voice chat.. and having voice chat in general was annoying to me. No idea about prochat, have not used it.. I left the old chat because there was no way to ignore certain people and I was sick of them telling people lies about me. Also most of the pictures where of things I would rather not have seen and I was again, unable to ignore the people who posted them.

I can't imagine video steaming being a good idea with TDF's no porn policy.

There are very simple web based IRC clients for first time users. I see mibbit used a lot. http://www.mibbit.com/ <edit> Err, Apparently mibbit has ads now and is stupidly expensive to remove them for some stupid reason. Still I am sure there are still others..
People who want to stick around/gain access to more features can grab a proper application like MIRC, Also free.

This made me LOL. :)

I'd be surprised if there isn't a leaner OSS/GPL solution out there to be had. I won't have time tonight (still working this SSL query script I'm building), but tomorrow while at work, I'll see if I can dig around a bit.

Right, I was sure there were others too, until I went looking, and I'm like WTF? *THE* original Internet Chat application, and all the web-based implementations are so jacked up, or projects abandoned. MIRC was ok for a little bit, but I ended up using xChat for IRC, but even that, I cant imagine a n00b trying to use.. selecting a server (or typing one in), knowing how to /join #channel, etc.. All those things we take for granted, because we used it back in the 90's. I even thought about re-writing a DDial-like clone, for those of us who chatted online back in the 80's. =)

Aside from IRC, when the advent of HTML5 to "replace flash", I was SURE there was tons of stuff out there, because "it's so easy to create a chat system in html5", yet, I found none. Yet more abandonware. Its amazing what you can't find out there. The noise floor for apps has gotten so high, that is hard to find decent stuff.

If someone could write a good html5 chat system, and sell it for even $20, they'd probably make thousands, then millions when google or facebook buys 'em out, and puts in all their spyware.
