How to make friends at Canadian Customs... sortof. :)
I've noted in a number of threads the interest for those of us that habitate in Canada, but travel south for either relocating dolls or possibly a S/H deal or two.
Mine was the latter, with no S/H available to Canada from the seller. I drove down to our southerly brothers this weekend, claimed my unmarked box (100cm) and drove back to the border crossing with all sorts of dialogue in my head. I had pre-printed out my paypal pricing (showing proof of payment) as well as the conversion from my CC. (also showing the paypal payment essentially)
Once at the "window", I got a polite female customs officer who asked the nature of my trip - in this case "I picked up mail and groceries". Did I have anything to declare? Yes I did - a collectible doll worth well more than my daily ... zero free dollars
She asked the value, I told her the CDN conversion amount, and in I went. The fellow at the desk inquired the nature of the purchase, and before I really thought about it I said the following:
"it's a silicone covered fully articulated metal skeleton".
there was a short pause (during which, the lovely asian lady beside me was ordered to try and get someone to email her a complete valuation of the boxes she was picking up full of stuff from a friend, or customs was going to keep it all) and then his eyebrows went up a bit, and he said
"cool! a metal skeleton. Ok that'll be Gst&Pst, do you mind using credit or debit, and do you prefer USD or CDN?"
2 minutes later, i'm out, having paid my % taxes, and driving home with my new doll.
The moral of this is - short of some complete psycho, using the following words will likely stop anything other than "give me your wallet" type conversations: Skeleton, collectible, metal... even silicone or plastic would likely do it.
I wouldn't even hesitate having to do it again.
Cheers all - and have safe fun!
