Photos loading sideways!

Since Tuesday 8th August my portrait photos have been loading sideways from my laptop! I haven't changed anything so has anything changed on TDF?

This is really annoying as I can't understand why this has suddenly changed! I've been loading from the same batch on the Monday with no problem then suddenly on Tuesday everything changed!

Thanks, Hollows.

Nothing changed at TDF.

This is strange. I know this happens on images taken by some phones. But why this happens on your pictures starting Tuesday ... that's strange.

Thanks Nescio, I haven't had a Windows update (last one was in July) so it's quite annoying as it just seemed to be one day ok the next not! I really don't want to put them through an editing program before loading as I just don't have the time when I load so many in Ashaki's thread!

I tried again tonight and it was hopeless but I'll do a few more test loading tomorrow and see if anything has changed! I can see it in the Preview setting.

If I view the last lot on my iPad it's fine!

Cheers, Hollows.

I've always had the problem with them being sideways in the thread but when clicked they are correct.

Just opening in any edit program and save without change helped...

This is both from camera and phone. They all look correct when view on the computer though.

My conclusion is that tdf thumbnail generator isn't the best...

Well, I think I've found a way round it for the time being! I made a separate folder to copy the required images into then opened them in GIMP and exported them back replacing the original files in that folder (not the original images!)! I'm not sure if the quality has been reduced by doing that but at least they are the right way up now!

Thanks Sofos for suggesting doing something like that!

It's a bit of a faff and I still don't know why it just started happening but at least I can post something again!

Cheers, Hollows.

This is an issue with pictures taken in portrait-mode on smartphones. Something to do with orientation-data in the file (EXIF) that is often ignored in web-browsers for desktop computers, while I believe it's most often viewed correctly on browsers in phones. It can also be an issue with pictures taken with older digital cameras that doesn't include any EXIF-data at all.

In both cases you can solve it as you already mentioned, by re-saving the images through a fairly modern image editing software, which will update the EXIF-information in the image file.

I believe there are fixes for this to phpbb forums out there for admins. It's been a few years since I messed around with this, but I'd be surprised if it's still as much of a problem. I rarely see this issue in other forums anymore.

Thanks Nord but I have a Nikon D3300 and load to Windows 10 Pictures. I have had no problem loading photos until Tuesday this last week! It suddenly started happening without me changing any settings anywhere! I've had problems with loading photos from my iPad before (often they are upside down!) but never from my laptop!

However, I'll look at what's happening with the EXIF data thanks.

Do you have this issue with pictures taken with your Nikon camera :o

I knew this issue from some smartphones and tablets ... here's a test with a Samsung Galaxy J7

Test 1, unedited file directly from the phone, it's sideways:

The image viewer on my laptop (ACDSee 20 shows it right, also shows that it has been rotated).

Test 2, gone to edit mode in ACDSee and saved without changing anything. Now in the EXIF data the orientation is changed from "Right Upper" to "Upper Left":

OK, I've logged on using my iPad and my laptop at the same time!

My laptop shows your first photo laying on its side with her head to the left. The second photo is upright as it should be!

However, on my iPad both photos are the right way up!!!

Damn this modern technology! It's too smart!

Cheers, Hollows.

Maybe it's browser dependent 8O

Check: Windows + FireFox: first picture on its side
Check: Windows + Edge: first picture on its side
Check: Samsung phone webbrowser: first picture on its side

So it's just your iPad showing both right

Hmmm! Thanks Nescio, I think! What I don't understand is why I've he'd no problem for months and then it suddenly changed! I think I'd have understood it if it happened straight away with my camera/Windows10 combination but that wasn't the case!

This gets confusing, because "the way it should be" and "the way it was shot" are different.
"Should be" is the way we WANT to see it on screen, but the first shot (sideways) is the way
it was actually shot, so that's the one that is accurate.

It doesn't help that cameras, browsers, software etc. are changing orientation on the fly and
it isn't all that well documented (or not that easy to find) so it is mostly one of those things
we don't think about until it is a problem.

This is from my experience with Android phones, and from surfing XDA-Developers Forums.

Samsung Galaxy phones are NOTORIOUS for bad EXIF rotation data. I had two: Samsung Galaxy on5 (MetroPCS), Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge (Boost Mobile) and they always had my photos in landscape orientation even if I took the picture in a portrait orientation.

A couple LG phones, the LG K7 (MetroPCS) and Tribute 5 (Boost Mobile), same phone just different carrier do that too.

But my current phone, the ZTE Prestige 2 (N9136, Boost Mobile) doesn't do that.

Case in point:

Picture of Elisabeth Rachael Snow (DSDoll EX Lite) taken with ZTE Prestige 2 in portrait orientation:

No editing needed.

Photo of same doll with same phone in landscape orientation:

(Watching Good Eats, as you can see... )

Still in correct orientation.

From personal experience, Samsung and LG phones have this bug in the camera app that doesn't report the correct orientation in the EXIF data.

Do the pictures show correctly on the camera screen?

If not, go to the Nikon camera system menue and check, if the picture orientation is set to automatic.
Sometimes pressing two knobs at the same time changes settings (dont ask why I know).
