Well, I'm going to throw out the name of one of my DnD characters... She was actually a half-elf orphan, raised by dwarves.... But still.

Her name was Magdelia. Mags to her friends. Maggie to her family. That chick who shot Oleg in the balls to everyone else...

A name Norse, means: "Divine Strength", can also mean "Divine Beauty" and "Princess" of natural beauty

Syrinx in Greek Mythology


Let’s take a look at one of the more obscure characters in Greek mythology. The character in question is a nymph named Syrinx. One of our best sources for the story of Syrinx comes from the Roman writer Ovid. He tells the tale of Syrinx in Book I of his Metamorphoses.

Syrinx is interesting because she actively resisted the advances of a god. In this case, the god was Pan. You see, Pan decided that this carefree devotee of Artemis – or Diana, as the Romans called her – was just too attractive to allow to get away. And who knows, perhaps her lack of interest in him was a contributing factor as well. Pan pursued the nymph. The more he tried to catch her, the more elusive she became. Pan, however, was pretty relentless.

The nymph finally reached the river Ladon after this arduous chase. Almost within the grasp of Pan, Syrinx desperately invoked the water nymphs who resided in the river for assistance. Well, you get what you get when you ask for favors in mythology. And in this case, Syrinx was transformed into a cluster of reeds. Yes, she escaped the amorous Pan. Sort of. Pan consoled himself with the loss of the nymph by fashioning the clump of reeds into a musical instrument. Ovid describes the incident as follows:

“And Pan, who thought that he had caught the nymph,
did not clutch her fair body but marsh reeds;
and he began to sigh; and then the air,
vibrating in the reeds, produced a sound
most delicate, like a lament. And Pan,
enchanted by the sweetness of a sound
that none had ever heard before, cried out:
‘And this is how I shall converse with you!’
He took unequal lengths of reeds, and these
Pan joined with wax: this instrument still keeps
the name Pan gave it then, the nymph’s name – Syrinx.”
