Yes I'm still using the same printer - the Afinia H479.
I had to do a little maintenance on it just lately but it's still kicking out great print after print.
The plastic isn't that expensive. This new skin colored filament is $29 for a 700 gram (1.5 lbs) spool.
You can print a lot of stuff with a pound and and half of plastic.

I can't wait to get my hands on the Peachy Printer, which Kickstarter campaign started on September 2013. It has been two years of exhausting waiting, but finally we backers will get it on December, hoping there won't be more delays... That printer is super cheap and seems capable of doing interesting works. I really want to create some sort of big, tall BJD just like you are doing now.

I hope you have good luck with the Peachy printer.
Here's Abby's hand fresh off the printer. Printed at the highest quality (150 micron layers) took about 2-1/2 hours.
It's about 3-1/2" tall. Here's the wrist joint...

Re: My Afinia 3d printer has arrived!
This BuMat filament is beautiful stuff. Wish I would have found this earlier.
This is going to bring things to a whole new level.
Try to find the glue joint in this 2 piece forearm... The 2 pieces were welded together with acetone/ABS slurry (same color ABS) and then using a small artist brush, the seam line was built up with the slurry.
After setting overnight to completely harden, the seam was sanded off flush. Voila, invisible joints!
This test piece was sanded with 150 grit paper to remove any rough lines, then burnished to a shiny finish with acetone/paper towel and finally given a coat of Krylon clear matte finish to remove the shine.
The acetone in the Krylon sealer fuses to the plastic remarkably well. The end result gives a finish that almost rivals that of a resin doll... Another pic of the hand/wrist parts...

Hi Kathy and welcome to TDF!Kathy-Jones wrote:There are bigger printers right? Can we print a full size doll using one of those?
Tiertime in China just came out with the UP BOX printer which is basically the same printer as the Afinia H800 that I posted about earlier.
They don't seem to be shipping yet for some reason, not sure why. It would handle a part almost twice the size of my H479 so a full size doll would be much easier to do. I could essentially double the size of Abby without adding more pieces - the pieces would just be bigger.
http://www.tiertime.com/EN/Products/Des ... 6/114.html
The biggest issues with printing large parts are warping and long print times. Some of the parts for Abby's body are 6-1/2 to 7 hour prints, so you'd be talking at least 14 hours a print for twice the size. The worst thing that can happen is to have a 14 hour print fail near the end, wasting lots of material and time.
The BOX printer is fully enclosed which should help a lot, and they also are coming out with a special ABS filament for printing large parts, but get ready to get out your wallet as it's going to be expensive filament.

Re: My Afinia 3d printer has arrived!
I'm trying to get away from the magnets and steel parts and go with a similar ball-in-ball concept for all the joints.
This will give complete control over the tightness of each joint and will keep the doll all one material.
All the hardware can be obtained at any Lowes or Home Depot.
This shoulder joint will provide 3 axes of movement.
360 rotation, raise and lower, and the embedded bolt with the nylok nut will allow the arms to roll forward and backward as needed for certain positions. Here are the printed parts for the upper arm and shoulder...

Thanks RK!rubherkitty wrote:Great design! Can't wait to see it installed on Abby.

Do you remember that shoulder cup thing I was doing a long time ago with the MSB?
There's a pesky post just inside of the arm hole that limits the depth but I think it could work with this adapter.
I also have a neck adapter for the head...

Aside from a few minor issues that need to be fixed, I think it worked quite well.
Abby says Hi TDF!... Full arm bend and salute! (well sort of)
