Heels

Post by DDdioxine »

Following the footsteps of MannequinFan, I am starting to make a pair of high heels for my Little Eva.

Will see how it goes.

Looks great. I have made dozens of the smaller heels on my printers. They work well. Finishing them is a pain.
Also made a few 1/3 scale dolls and those I'm displaying on the wall unit.

I'm facing a problem right now because the design is too large for my printer. Need to cut each one into 4 pieces the assemble them after printing.

Hey DD, looks like fun! :)
What size print bed do you have?
I was able to print the full size shoe for the 100cm dolls on my Afinia within a 5" cube by turning it diagonal on the bed.
It just fit.

You should be able to print at least 2 pieces and glue those together, but I'm also fairly certain one piece should fit on a standard printer. I did buy the awesome CR-10 large format printer for just these things, and it's just perfect. I use cura, but simplify 3D has been my slicer for the last several months.

I just checked on my smaller printer and a size pump 5.5 and 5" heel will fit within the build space if placed diagonally. I suspect your printer is simliar to my smaller I3 prusa.

I am using a DLP printer, print size 116 X 65 X 130 mm. That's mainly for small items like jewelry. This will be the largest item I've printed.

Wow DD that's really small.
I know I've said this before, but you should check into getting a cheap FDM printer for doing larger things. Your savings in resin costs would probably pay for it after a while.
The prices have been coming down quite a bit lately. Here's one that's got a lot of attention lately - less than $400...

Most of my designs are small and pack with minute details. I can usually print 4 to six pieces in one go. The resolution is 0.025 per layer (adjustable) in order to reproduce the details. That's why I have my printer.

If I'm continue to design more large items, I'll probably consider a FDM. That, I'll have to see.

Started to cut up the heels and putting in registrations. The arch I though might need some reinforcement so that it won't be a weakness point after assembly.

Also hollowed out a pair to check cost on Shapeways. Cost $46 to print with PLA. Shipping just increased to $26

On mine, I printed in PLA and these were the result
The heels are just for show, as neither dolls stand in them. But pretty they are.
I am going to print a set for the 140cm lady - shoes around size 4 I think, and if you want the stl file I'll pass it along to you.
I model them in MAX, so I can work in STL or in native .MAX format as well.
Took several generations of attempts to work out what bugs there are in this style of printing, and now have the workflow ironed out. I am not working in ABS as that's been very hard to do without errors of bed adhesion..

Oh, off topic, these printers can do some nice 1/3 scale dolls too

Mishka

Very nice heels! And very pretty 1/3 dolls.
I wonder how much effort is required to smooth down the surface?

Hey DD looking good.
Just curious, to help with the arch strength would the joint be stronger if you cut it a little into the upper?
That would give you a lot more glue area and keep it solid at the weakest point.
Just a thought.

Would you be able to print the full toe piece, full back section and full heel with them turned on end like so?

Also, is your printer big enough to print the heel (green part) in one piece?
Thanks for the suggestion, MannequinFan. Unfortunately cutting at that position will make the back parts too large for my printer.
Here are the parts to be printed:

Yeah, that's why I was suggesting turning them on end and having the heel separate and printed in one piece. Without the heel, the back section should fit I would think.
Is your Z height 130mm or 116mm?
It may also help reduce support material turning them on end if possible.
Anyway, good luck! I'm sure they will come out great however you do it.
