Part 3: whereupon our heroine, Lily, has returned to the Fallen Cedar, in search of the mysterious dark-cloaked figure from the Carpathians, and has called out a tentative:

“Halloo?”

“Vera?”

...

And soon enough, there came a shuffling from the hollow beneath the trunk….

And out popped Vera!

“Hello again, my little friend!” she beamed at Lily with her big, toothsome smile.

Although Vera still kept to the shady side of the tree and away from direct sunlight - Lily could see that her hooded companion wasn’t really that scary after all, just a little excited and lonely.

And so they soon settled down for a nice long chat….

Vera explained how she had left her native country, after growing tired of a steady diet of mountain goats and wild flowers.
She had longed to see more of the big, wide world, and so had travelled east,
over the crackling, icy mountain tops of Carpathia
across the vast steppes of Russia,
and through the bleak terrain of Siberia,

Until, after many months, Vera finally reached the wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

Vera’s big adventure turned sour though, after her crate toppled overboard in a big storm, and she ended up being washed up on the rocky, western coastline, with no money and no friends!
And so, she had simply swapped bowlfuls of homemade curried mountain goat with a garnish of tasty flowers (a local delicacy back in Carpathia) for a steady - and very boring - diet of tough, chewy deer and bitter, munchy moss!

“Ewwwwww!” Lily made a sour face at the thought of eating soggy moss for dinner every day!

However, Vera didn’t hear Lily, as she became lost in a fog of distant memories.

“Ah, Carpathia!” she sighed.

For, to be perfectly honest, after all these years, she was very homesick.
Even eking out an existence in the cold, snow-covered mountains of Carpathia was better than hiding out under a mouldy old tree trunk in a damp forest!

Now, Lily was touched by Vera’s story - for she too loved to travel and explore.
However, she couldn’t really help Vera get back home - at least, not yet - since Lily herself was due to leave for London the day after tomorrow.
But she could at least make Vera’s life a little easier, out here in the woods!

“Come by the cottage this evening!” Lily declared. “I have an idea!”

...

The next day, Lily sat on the deck of the cosy cottage in the woods, and watched the sun set through the trees.

It was her last evening before returning to London and Miss Elisabeth, and Cosy, and Kiko, and Bonesy. She missed them terribly.
“I do hope Vera will be okay out here, all on her own.” Lily sighed...

Inside, Vera was sat on the couch, enjoying the nice comfy cushions and sighing contentedly to herself.
“How nice of my new friend Lily to let me stay here and guard the cosy cottage for her while she is away!”

“Oooh!” Vera grinned, as she spotted the big bookshelf of videos and dvds which took up most of one wall. “How I used to love watching the magic lantern shows, back in the old country!”

A nice dry cottage to live in… with big thick curtains… a big collection of movies… and some nice tender deer stew, with carrots and potatoes simmering in the pot in the kitchen…

“Yes, I think I will enjoy it here very much indeed!”….

I always pictured vampires would be vegans. would be a good irony.
Enjoyed the series cozycottage. My fav pic is the last one with Lily waving.

Blood is hardly vegan food, or were you thinking of a vegan blood; like ketchup or something? :haha4:

Seriosly though, great story Cosy.   Nicely left open for a possible sequel. :glou:
