“No.” Cosy was firm. “This is my holiday. I can’t take you everywhere all the time, you know. You can just stay here enjoy the forest with Vera.”

And to be fair, it was a lovely forest…
As the evening began to close in, Lily sat outside on the deck, silent and wistful, lost in her thoughts.
She simply couldn’t bear to watch Cosy packing his suitcase and backpack, ready for the early morning start.

But it was only fair that she kept Vera company. After all, Cosy had brought her all the way out here to spend time at the cottage - she should simply count her blessings.
Later that night, Lily couldn’t sleep - and not just because of Cosy’s horrendous snoring!
Instead, she stayed up talking to Vera whiling the small hours away.

“Oh don’t be silly, my little friend.” Vera enouraged, “You go ahead. Do not mind about me -
I have a bumper crop of wild flowers to collect for my salads.
And that squirrel catapult to perfect…
and…”
“But Cosy doesn’t want me to go!” Lily protested glumly.
“Ah, but what Cosy does not know, he cannot do anything about!” Vera giggled conspiratorially...
And so it was that Lily found herself clambering into Cosy’s backpack in the middle of the night!

Soon enough, Lily was being juggled about inside the backpack, as Cosy set off down the hill. It was a bumpy ride, but still she kept quiet as a mouse…
Later, she felt the rumble of the early morning ferry vibrating the contents of the bag, but she daren’t peek her head out to view the sun slowly climbing up below the horizon…

Cosy could still order her onto the next ferry back - or, worse still, drop her off at the post office!
Before long, she heard the exciting sounds of the coach station outside, people hurrying to wonderful destinations...
Cosy clambered on board, pushing his rucksack roughly and horizontally into the overhead compartment, causing Lily to let out a little "Oof!".. but quickly stifled any sound. However, she was not discovered, and she soon felt the tyres rumble on tarmac as they left the station and lumbered in stop-start lurch-left-and-right fashion through town...

... and in a short while, she felt the Greyhound charging through the landscape, but still she dare not show herself.
Oh! Cosy will be so mad when he finds out! She thought to herself.
But, the backpack was so comfy, and the sound of the wheels beneath so hypnotic, that an exhausted Lily Lillington soon found herself nodding off to sleep, as the sun began to set, far from view…
