Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll

Post by komugi »

for those who are not familiar with Danny Choo ... he runs an English language website about Japanese culture/pop-culture

not long ago I saw a teaser post about a smart doll that he was getting developed ... a 60cm tall bjd that was being turned into a small robot :D

the vid on this page shows an early motion test of the doll ... keep in mind it is an EARLY test ... the doll is still in development ... so the production model will undoubtedly have smoother movement, as well as a wider range of movement
http://www.dannychoo.com/en/post/27026/ ... Mirai.html

the link for the start of the info about her is
http://www.smartdoll.jp
that takes you to the Danny Choo main page for her

Mio and I will have to have a long discussion about whether she wants a sister around the house ... but I can just imagine going to a bjd doll show with both of them ... and one of the dolls with me starts waving at people on her own

from what I have been seeing over the past few years ... the prices for "Limited Edition" dolls in that size range usually run in the $1300-$1500 range ... and that is for non-robotic dolls ... so I am going to hazard a guess and think that she will be in the $1500-$2000 range once they get her in production

I kind of doubt that she will be a high volume production run ... I can suspect they will keep the production numbers low until they see how well sales are doing

very good question

I can kind of suspect that she will have to be tethered to either a battery pack, because with that many servomotors I cant imagine any sort of built in batteries would last more than a few min, up to maybe 20-30 minutes max ... of if the servomotors are pneumatic there is no way any sort of built in air compressor would be sufficient, which would mean she would have to be tethered to some sort of supply of compressed air

it will be interesting to see what is required for her once they get her into production

That doll is super awesome 8O :D I'm kind of a tech-no geek so definitely this doll is very intriguing! Can't wait to see videos/reviews of production dolls! Great idea

a bit of an update on little miss cutie

it looks like she is going to be available in 2014

on the Danny Choo site it mentions that there will be a few for sale that will show up at Anime Expo 2014, Jul 3-6, 2014, in Los Angeles
http://www.dannychoo.com/en/post/27026/ ... Mirai.html#
the news is part way down on that page

I didnt see a price mentioned ... but it is good news ... it sounds like the work on her has been going successfully

I'm glad I posted about her again :D ... there were a few in here that who wanted her

***************************************************************

I dug deeper into that article and there are going to be two versions of her ... version 001 (what Danny is calling the "Manual" version) could be out as early as this coming March

the "Manual" version will essentially be just a normal ball-jointed doll ... and Danny said the price for that version should be comparable to other 60cm dolls already on the market ... which would put her in the $600-$700 range

the fully robotic Mirai will be version 002 ... he did not list an availability date for that version yet, and no price estimates yet either for that version

I'm not sure which version he will be taking to the Anime Expo in LA this summer ... considering that is still a bit over 7 months from now, it is possible that he might have a few of the first fully robotic versions with him
