There's an associated video of them actually casting these monster balloons. I'm guessing from the title that there are parts 1 and 2 to this series of videos if anyone can find them.

Making a giant latex balloon swan (Japan TV show)

Post by Aerial »

Which Japanese TV show came this from? They apparently try to make the world biggest twisted latex balloon swan sculpture and paddle on it across a lake.

Although the show team IMO does a bit too much violence (against the latex and each others), it is still ok in context of what appears to be a Mythbusters-style science comedy experiment (and world record attempt?).

First they visit a small manufactory for handcrafted latex balloons. Strange is how the team (as a game rule of the challenge?) then tries to mix various food ingredients (butter?, sugar, tofu?, ???) into the latex to tests which makes the balloons most stretchable. Apparently a reddish liquid (wine?, soy sauce?) was most successful, but they likely also added red latex dye. Interesting is how they then make the giant twist balloons (each d15*400cm?) by dipping inside a hall (boathouse?) ordinary flat PVC drain pipes horizontally into shallow vats and rotating them by hand while pouring additional latex over them to fix bubbles. Apparently they let the latex dry in a transparent foil tent that may have fan heaters in it. Finally they pull the resulting red cylindrical latex tube off the pipe while adding plenty of silicone oil or glycerine to prevent sticking. As a balloon one end is knotted and the other inflated with an electric blower and then tied with a latex strip.

Although they initially had some fails causing it to burst (may be many other fails were cut out of the film), the relatively crude process surprisingly worked well enough to create giant balloons strong enough for twisting the swan and holding body weight. Finally the swan is carried out of the hall onto a lake and the team (in neoprene suits) attempts to paddle on it across the lake. At the end one of the balloons bursts (collision with the paddle?), so the team destroys the rest.

- Does anybody here speak Japanese?

What kinds of food ingredients did they mix into the latex and why? Were other technical details explained? What kind of show was this? (There are no subtitles on the Youtube video.)

Yes - this technique looks as though one might be able to cast latex perhaps from a silicone doll, and with thickeners do what Domax did.

Fabin - I thought you come from Japan?

There seem to be two sorts of latex - one which needs heat to cure and the other which smells of Ammonia which is self curing. This doesn't appear to be rocket science . . .

Before more than 10 years, it was one of Japanese TV entertainment program of popular young guys group. They turned interests to something various action, and tried as DIY.

Here, I'll show one screen shot.
In the picture, I added English text on to four food ingredients they mixed into the latex.

Brilliant. And did they choose any of those ingredients?

There seem to be two versions of latex - one requiring heat and the other a cold cure probably smelling of ammonia.

Can the results be the same?

Was Domax using cold cure and a thickener for the latex?

Thanks! So the red stuff was sesame oil - apparently this was the only tested substance that actually increased stretchability of the resulting balloons. AFAIK balloon latex always contains some added oil, but this also increases hysteresis and may make it decompose faster, so the mixture may be not recommended for making latex dolls or garments.

Cold vulcanizing (RTV) latex only contains additional sulphur and may be some accelerants. The ammonia prevents it from solidifying already inside the bottle; its evaporation reduces PH value and so starts the vulcanization process. But hot vulcanized latex tends to be less prone to decomposition.

I websearched the Japanese TV series "Tetsuwan DASH"; it seems to be a mix of Mythbusters-style science experiments, reports, comedy and music.

Aerial:
You can get 2 differant types of latex per valcanized, unvalcanized latex needs 5 to 7 days to cure, pre-valcanized is heated 140 f to make per-valcanizes latex and dosen't need to boiled but unvalcanized will have to boiled for 2 hours or left for 5 to 7 days to fully cure.

The two types of latex are pre valcanzied and un-valcanzied, To correct my self pre-valcanzied latex is heated to 140c or 248f, un valcanzied need to be left to dry 5 to 7 days or boiled for 2 hours.
