I absolutely hated powdering him at first because I was using a makeup brush which flicked powder ALL over the place, resulting in an ungodly mess.
I use face brush, it works mutch better than brush you use. It's a very soft brush but holds all the dust in.. sort of :)

I prefer to avoid using any kind of brush for powder any more. I'm very happy with my home made powder puffs and will continue to use them. :D

I personally like using that face brush. Its very easy to wipe the doll's skin with it and the end result is very smooth.. and no mesh :)

I have tried everything myself, e.g. a large powder brush and a high-quality artist brush. The problem with the powder brush is that it makes a mess and its bristles are not stiff enough to move the powder on the doll's skin. An artist's brush is just not suitable for this.

It's all a matter of trial and error and finding out what works best for our dolls.

It probably depends on your tolerance of tackiness. Personally, I don't mind some slight tackiness, so I don't powder mine often. It also makes the doll feel more like real skin from my experience.

When, why and how to use a powder in conditioning the surface skin of your doll is variable.

First off not all powders are equal and as such each have their own unique properties which can mean one may be better applied to a variety of situations.

Cornstarch (organic, non water soluble below 150°F, anticaking granular with mild water absorption -pasty)
A weak surface bond to silicone requiring applications more often inbetween use. In TPE or silicone with high leech sometimes absorbency is too low to overcome that leeching in which then talcum or better yet Bentonite is preferable. In silicone with little to no leeching this is a good pick for being readily available, least harsh, and easy to apply.

Talcum (clay, non water soluble, anticaking, dry lubricant, film layering skin surface protectant from high moisture yet mildly water absorbent, flat crystalline low sheer-flaky & pasty)
Because it forms a film it adheres better for use on TPE but will require reapplication in between uses. Can also create sheen in high leeching materials. Cons are difficult to find and be a lung irritant when applying.

Bentonite (clay, non water soluble, anticaking, collide lubricant, granular crystalline -high water absorption -gel like film)
Because it also forms a film that's gel like and has high water absorption this is probably your best solution for high leeching materials. Best when applied by hand and rubbed in with the longest durability over time. Cons are it can irritate sensitive skin, usually needs to be ordered online and as a collide lubricant can remove a finish coat over time if your doll has one especially if any leeching beneath the color/matte coating is present.

Why use a brush? I've always just used my hand to pat it on with no problems. It might be a little blotchy at first but it eventually rubs in smooth. I also worry that bristles will scratch her up. Is there something I'm missing and should I get a brush?

Powdering with a brush over by hand is that a brush is less abrasive so say if your doll is just for photography whatever finishing paint job was applied will last longer. Some color coating applications can be so delicate that hand rubbing can rub it off.

If I’m to brush I would only use a soft makeup brush specifically made for gentle powdering.

Good to know, thanks! I will look into buying a soft one.

Don't know about you guys, but my hands and fingers are rough as hell from playing guitar and working on cars. The makeup brush I use to smooth out cornstarch is way softer. It also makes it easier to get into those hard to reach places.
