Eyeball modifications?

Post by msdoll »

Has anyone done any eyeball mods on a mannequin? I see you can buy a variety of them cheap on eBay and such.

Apparently, the average size of a full grown human eyeball is 24mm. My MQ's eyes seem smaller than that though.
I think the great thing about this would be that not only will she look more realistic, but maybe the eyes can be changed out with different colors.

I would imagine you would start by dremeling out the sockets. since the eyes wouldn't fit through the holes and you would have to come up with a way to secure them. Maybe through a hole in the back of the head.

Id be surprised to see if there has been many MQ eye mods.

Any ideas?

This was a lot of work but here's an eye mod I did for my mannequin Fiona...

The only reason I did this was because she was an all white mannequin when I got her with no eye detail painted.
Here's the thread if you want more info...

I've had so many other things going that it never got finished unfortunately.

Re the eye color change, I had this idea...

I have done it on a styling head from china.
these 2 are sisters who both had painted on eyes. I put 22m eyes in and filled in the gaps on the sides with white wax than shaped it to match, and coated the wax parrs with enamal

Oh nevermind you are talking about a full maniquin, this is a foam filled head lol

I put static glass eyes in my mannequin and it made a huge improvement to the look. The painted on flat eyes aren't very realistic and dead looking. I used a Dremel motortool to grind out the fiberglass and needed to grind a lot of material away from the back of the eye area. after struggling, i found the ideal tool for my motortool, which was a round grinding stone, which was able to make a curved inside eye-lid. i haven't found an easy way to mount the glass eyes, but just use clay and some bits to hold them in place. I also needed access to the inside of the head, so i cut a panel out of the back of the head and hinged it for easy access.

Hey there Krule World. I too was thinking about installing realistic looking eyes. I was also thinking about a "door" opening in the back of the head. I am curious as to how you created your "door". Could you post any pics about that?

Thanks for posting.

I didn't do a very good job, but someone with some skill should be able to make one seamless. The hard part is getting a hinge on a curved surface. i accomplished it with some wood inserts to provide a flat surface.

That is a good idea to use some wood as an anchor. You might also be able to use almost any type of wadding between the hinge and the plastic, even wadded up paper or pieces of cardboard, then use small bolts and tighten down with some nuts, if you ever find that the piece of wood is too large. I have been using this gorilla glue, which expands, and breaking up popsicle sticks and gluing them together with the gorilla glue, and that also works okay to anchor screws and hinges. After I tighten every thing down with the wet glue, the glue expands and tightens up even further from the other side. I found the pieces of scrap wood, when I cut them too small, often split from the screw.
