Sweet Valentines

There were many historical evidences that indicated romantic relationship between Alexander the Great and his second-in-command and confidant Hephaestian, from their teenage years until their untimely deaths a few months apart. After watching videos on their story Tom asked me if I could unite the lovers again.

Exploring the internet I came across many sculptures and figurines of Alexander but none of Hephaestian. Not to disappoint Tom, I decided to improvise.

Since Colchester was the first city of Britain established by the Roman invaders with many Roman archaeological sites and artefacts I already had a figurine of Roman centurion guarding my hallway. So I decided to give him additional role as Hephaestian and invited (bought) a figurine of Alexander the Great from the same company. As high quality sculptures of Veronese Design Studio Collection they looked great together. Also, Alexander was significantly shorter, reflecting reality. In real life Hephaestian was taller and some historical evidences suggested that he was the top/active lover.

On a different page they were the legendary king of Greece and the distinguished warrior of Rome, representing two great cultures. Ancient Romans loved ancient Greeks so much that they created their gods similar to the Greeks', only with different names - Jupiter for Zeus, Hercules for Heracles, Mercury for Hermes, Bacchus for Dionysus, etc. They made reproductions of Greek statues to adore. Roman scholars and nobility studied Greek culture and philosophy. Topping all that was the love story between Roman emperor Hadrian and his young Greek male lover Antinous.

Tom's wish led us not only to the union of two legendary warrior lovers but also to the union of two great intimate cultures from which emerged a powerful emperor and his beautiful lover. That made sweet Valentines of our sanctuary, Tom and me, very happy.
