Need your opinion: are sex dolls going mainstream?

Post by Illyxia13 »

Hello Doll Forum members! I'm currently trying to learn as much as I can about the evolving sex doll/robot industry, and I'd love some insight from some of the people who know the most about it. If you have a moment to share your thoughts on any of the questions below, before Monday, I will be eternally grateful, sending all the good karma points I can your way!

1. What first drew you to the use of dolls as a sexual outlet? What makes them preferable to, say, hand masturbation, prostitutes, or other sexual outlets?
2. How long have you been using sex dolls in your erotic play?
2. Do you engage in erotic play with your sex dolls exclusively on your own, or (sometimes) with a partner?
3. Do you (also) use electronic toys in your sex play (vibrators, etc.)?
4. Does anyone have a fully robotic sex doll at home (or elsewhere)?

Thank you to anyone who responds!

I'm gathering opinions as a follow-up to an story I wrote 8 years ago on this topic. I would love to use your thoughts and opinions in this follow-up story. Everything you say here remains confidential (you can decide whether you would rather I use your screen name, or just make up an alias). The original story appeared in Time Out Amsterdam in 2012, and the follow-up story will appear on 5 Media.

Any responses I get my Monday are MUCH appreciated in helping me and others gain a deeper understanding of the evolution and future of the technology and how it is used.

Firstly, you seem to be ignoring a large segment of doll owners. Not everyone uses their dolls for sex or even erotic play. Some of us just like dolls and enjoy dressing them up, photographing them and having them around. Anatomical functionality not withstanding. I think if dolls ever went mainstream, it would be for that reason.

Well said. Dolls as companions are also a topic in itself.

Very good input; thank you both! Would either of you be willing to tell me a little bit more about that?

First off, no; sex dolls are not going mainstream. It is just too much judgemental attitudes around it for it to be understood. And I also think too many people are too afraid of wanting to understand it due to judgemental attitudes.

Second, if you spend 1-2 hours reading through all the replies in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=87&t=44977 you will get a much wider image than you seem to have now based on your questions. For example, probably no one here has an actual sex robot as of yet. They are too expensive and they are really not practical as of yet.

That was one of the threads that changed my mind completely about the entire doll community. At first when I joined I found it to be creepy, weird and that most people here must be weird people. As I went through that looong thread about "What brought you to dolls?" my mind changed as I realized many people were drawn to dolls because of so many more things (and sometimes completely other things) than just sex.

You can read about people who have lost their partners and found solace in having a doll who wears their past partner's clothes, people who are just tired of the entire dating game, people who are actually married(!) and found new spice in their marriage thanks to doll (or those who chose to not leave their partners for another one but got a doll to satisfy their sexual needs) and list goes on.

I have only received one PM on this platform where someone (in Swedish so another Swede) was talking about how he felt the hots that I felt the hots for my dolls but I just ignored that. So that it is one in a thousands after over 2 year(s) of what you might consider "weird" people while mainstream society would straight say all of them are "creepy" and "weird"!

So, there are fewer "creepy people" than you might think. I would bet my two nuts that you would find more and much creepier people at children's soccer practices than on here... Think about that one for a minute and its implications...

I also think laws would just ban dolls if it became a mainstream topic. It is just too out there for most people to grasp and more importantly, wanting to grasp in the first place. It just too much. And I don't blame them, and so I don't think dolls will ever become mainstream. Only banned mainstream in my opinion.

As long as media, manufacturers and vendors, are talking about sex dolls instead of love dolls, these dolls are not going to be mainstream.

Both for media and doll vendors, sex sells. Media likes sensationalism. Vendors like sales numbers. Why go mainstream.

Illyxia13, are you willing to publish about love dolls instead of sex dolls?

As Dr Franz and curiousswede exemplify, this forum encompasses far more than sex with dolls. I've only been a member for less than two months and I understand the variety and complexities of doll ownership. It feels to me the discussions are 15% related to specifically sex and 85% everything else!

In no way do i see dolls going "mainstream" at this juncture.

Look at the doll brothel "industry", if you can call it that. The logistics of delicate TPE and silicone dolls for hourly hire is a nightmare, and there appear to be only a few in operation around the world. In that sense, dolls aren't going to make the "sex for hire" transition in the mainstream. I think only until technology leaps into a "westworld" level will it gain any foothold. And that's probably after all of us are gone.

Maybe in the East, where they seem to already accept Dakimakura, or love pillows, .... love dolls are making a faster gain in popularity for that reason. Heck, nearly all "real dolls" are made in the East. And in the East they are considered love dolls not sex dolls.

To contrast in the US, the first big doll company RealDolls got a fair amount of mainstream press marketing itself with Porn Actresses. That early association solidified lifesize dolls as deluxe sex toys in the eyes of the average American. I think that put the stopper in making any strides for making dolls mainstream. There is little, if any discussion by the US media of the breadth and scope of doll ownership.

And finally, most mainstream articles jump onto the "rape culture", "sex trafficking" or "pedophilia" links to doll ownership. I completely respect and appreciate TDF's zero tolerance for it here.

My two cents anyways.

Mainstream, no.
More popular due to the pandemic, definitely.
More people have been getting them lately being stuck inside and all.

Don't know if they will ever go totally mainstream.

I will echo what the others have said here. If you want to do media/article or something about the companionship and other benefits of doll ownership, I am happy to help answer questions. If you want to know about my sex life with Maho, then all I can tell you is "we hold hands" and I would tell you the same thing with any lover I have ever had.

No it's not going mainstream, we are more likely to be rounded up and gassed before that happens.

I came into the world of sex Dolls through Porn, Then Fleshlights, Onaholes, then eventually TPE sexdolls, a very slow process, about half a decade ago. Actual Sex Doll Robots of any kind are still very much a rarity contrary to what you see in the Media, no I have not had any Sex Doll partners, or have used electronic sex toys, as far as this going mainstream, a few years back it was everywhere in the media, I am sure all the media coverage sparked a lot of interest, in new Realistic TPE dolls, And made a lot of new Sex Doll owners, but no this will never be mainstream, until AI Gynoid robot companions become a real thing, some time in some distant future.
