Where is the box or icon to click to stop minitoring a forum or thread?

Tried to find the info in the FAQ first but was not successful.

Not sure if this is what you mean ("monitoring a forum"), but there's the option to get an email once somebody replied to a topic where you have posted.

go to :
-> your account
-> your info
-> always notify me of replies
(x)yes ----> (x)no

I guess this is what you mean.
(checked your account settings on admin panel and it's switched on)
