The "configurator" ....a question...

Post by midnight »

Has anyone used the $20 "configurator" feature offered at RD ?

I want to know if it can focus in on designing the face....makeup, eye color, etc.

Hi Midnight,

I used the configurator, and unless they improved it, can only give general help. You do get to pick the body elements and face elements on separate screens, i.e. the face is a close up. Well, closer than the body, it's still not that big. But colors are a little off and the detail is not too clear. However, you can get a general idea of how the features will look. I had fun using it. But I used the Doll Album for seeing what designs looked like what in the pictures best.

Hi,
I've used it recently.
The new body and face types have just been uploaded.

It's not bad for giving you a rough idea. Worth it if you are serious about buying, and its easy to use

I tried getting some close ups by screen capturing images, then editing and zooming on them, cutting and pasting, etc in paintshop editor. - Doing this is a real hassle though.

I used the configurator to configure Lynne. Worked pretty well. But make sure to check out other resources as well, as mentioned above.

Thats a bit the difficulty.
Both configurator or dollalbum cannot show you how the doll really looks.
The configurator can give you a impression how the doll is going to look.
The doll album can provide you some additional pictures.
But nothing more than that.
The doll looks often far better in real live.
I don't know exactly the reason why dolls look that better if seen real, but its a fact that they look 30 % better in real.
See the best doll photography I know, e.g. Angels Charlie Joanne, Elsbeth II, Rebecca, Tanita...
Strange enough the pictures you find there are better than the ones on the Realdoll site 8O.
This may give you an impression wat the dolls look in real.

Hi mytime,

Did you find Tanita looking better i.r.l. than on Miepchen's website ?
I mean, those pics are great and I guessed this was pretty close
to the impression one had from viewing a RD in the flesh.
How do you feel TODAY at looking at those pics, now that you've seen the "actual" Tanita ?

Greets,
Mandollin

Mandolin, I think you are getting your dolls confused. Miepchen's doll is Pamela. Tanita belongs to MaxP, and she has a different site from Miepchen's.

I was getting the owners confused, actually. Beg your pardon, MaxP !
Thanks for the hint, JR

My question, however, was refering to Tanita, indeed.

Hi Mandolin.

Even Tanita looks IRL better than on Max-P's website (to avoid confusion see: http://www.tanita.tv.
Although I've to say that the difference between Tanita IRL and Tanita on www.tanita.tv is smaller than most other doll photographers.
Max is close to the work of photographers as Angel and Everhard.
Most times we are clicking with a simple digital compact camera without any extra preparation, only powdering at best.
If some extra work is done, then you can improve a lot.
But you can't get the 3d effect of the doll in the photograph.
IMO Matt's photographs are not a very good advertisement of his wonderfull product with all respect for Matt.
If he would sell view master disks http://www.fisher-price.com/us/view-master/ then you could see the doll in 3d and I think more realistic. A view master is a toy, used for viewing 3d images and not a very expensive one, so somebody who wants a doll can buy a view master easily.
I've just recieved some photo's from Max, were he's using a longer lens to reduce the "fishbowl" effect in the photograph.
They're very nice, and just a step closer to the IRL doll.
You can only reach that quality of photograph if you take effort in lightning, buy camera with longer lenses and experiment.
Costs money, just wat you want.

Hi mytime,

Well, this is the very answer I was hoping for.
Your statement even added to my confidence in the process of decision.
Thanks,

Mandollin

I used the configurator when I was making up my mind. It helped. The views aren't the best, but it gives you good enough idea to at least eliminate combinations that you don't like, and from there you can kind of use pictures in the matrix or your gut feeling to make up your mind.

Thanks to all who gave me advice on this topic....I did use the configurator to help me in picking out the make-up and stuff for Kaori
Now, all I have to do is figure out how to cancel the "re-bill."
