LOL, when I reread the title again I remembered that old saying as well.Netwit wrote:I didn't see these items on your list:Anything else I forgot

Yup, sugar & spice, a little baling wire, bondo, water pipe, electrical wire, duct tape....
ETA: Of course that old saying goes for little girls, who are not allowed on this playground!

What did you do for the hands?
What model styling head is Sofi? One of the best looking girls I've seen.
Is the head soft rubber when you pull the core out. I've only got one styling head and she has a rather odd look, but her face is rubber or at least soft.

Re: What girls are made of
There is a certain trade-off of practicality over realism. My latest design makes it possible to access the arms and legs by peeling back the fabric at the wrists and ankles. This allows me to make some repairs and alterations without removing the entire skin, but also creates a sleeve at those locations. I can remove the skin entirely without disrupting the underlying structure. Again there is a trade-off as I cannot use typical fabric sculpting techniques that make for a more realistic appearance and still be able to easily remove the skin for cleaning.
I use Gorilla tape to form the joints. While this may sound rather amateurish I have found that this gives the joints a more fluid and realistic movement over a metal henge. It is also very strong and repairable. If done correctly the joints can be made to resist bending backwards.
I tape copper cable over the joints to give the doll some rigidity and also to further restrict the joint movement. Putting the copper through the pipe bones was not successful because the sharp bend caused the copper wire to quickly break. The one exception to this is the spine which is constructed of copper cable through iron pipe connectors.
Weight is added to the doll to give it more realism. Fabric and padding is much lighter than silicone so the issue is not how to make it lighter, but rather how heavy you want it to be. Also, I do not have to worry about shipping costs.
Q. What did you do for the hands?
A. Copper wire, Polyethylene Tubing, Fabric tape and Batting. Gloves are made of the same material as the unitard skin. While I am happy with the skeleton I could do a better job of padding and skinning.
Q. What model styling head is Sofi?
A. I believe it is a HairArt Chantal. Some of their other human hair heads use the same mold though. There are a few alterations including adding eyes and removing the weird painted-on makeup. This was one of my first heads, purchased used on eBay to experiment with. The hair is horrible, thus the wigs. I am in the process of replacing it with one in better condition now that I know to apply glue to the inside of the scalp as removing the core allows the hair to fall out easily.
Q. Is the head soft rubber when you pull the core out?
A. No, but not entirely hard ether. It is made from vinyl which has some give to it. Too hard for oral functions though.
Q. How much do you think you have roughly spent on building her?
A. Hard to say because I had some of the material on hand. If you can find a source for electrical cable scraps it can save you a lot. The human hair head new will cost about $80 or more depending on the length and quality of the hair. A used one with a "haircut" will cost much less. The unitard skin with alterations cost about $65. Add another $10 for extra material. Everything else is relatively inexpensive. In all I would say around $300 and many hours of work.

Re: What girls are made of
I now see the hands are cloth / gloves. I just glanced the 1st time and thought they were actually molded rubber hands! You did great on them.
