Sometimes a thread I have read stays 'unread'! It only clears if I mark all posts read which I don't want to do.

At the moment I have six threads that say they are unread when I have read them. If I open them again, the thread goes to the first post which is really annoying!

Is there a reason for this glitch?

Try to clear the cache of your browser. I'm not sure, but often this helps.
