Wig care - Zara's methods

Post by Mechwizard »

Wigs can be a problem to keep looking good, even the synethetic ones. A little care and attention on a regular basis can keep them and your doll looking their best. The longer the hair the worse it is for tangles and knots.

Image

"God I look like a witch !"

With every wig there comes a time when you just can't rake a comb or brush through it without encountering knots and tangles.

Image

"Ouch !"

Remove tangles gently starting from the very tip and gradually working the brush up the hair with every following stroke. Don't force the brush through knots or tearing with occur. Work the knots apart with the fingers and then brush through.

Image

Be gentle or you will end up with a bald doll.

Image

"Good grief !"

All wigs will shed. The good quality wigs shed less but all loose hair.

Image

"That's better."

The best way to brush out a wig is to take it off the doll.

Image

You don't need fancy wig conditioner to detangle a wig. Simple water will do. Give the wig a thorough wet down along its length and back and front.

Image

Pay particular attention to the tips.

Image

Brush out the wig from the tips upward, working out knots as you go but never forcing the brush through them.

Image

To go to the next step wash the wig. Synthetics don't require frequent washes but they still gather dust.

Image

Lukewarm water, no hotter, and enough to immerse the wig.

Image

Synthetics only need a dash of shampoo. They don't need the full shampoo and conditioning trip that human hair wigs do.

Image

After being immersed, drain and rinse with fresh water.

Image

After draining, gently squeeze out excess water.

Image

Dry by wrapping in a towel.

Image

After covering pat down.
Then brush out and hang in a shady place to dry thoroughly.

Great job, Mechwizard! I know that there are always questions about wig care here. It is super that somebody finally took the time and effort to put together a tutorial for everyone to use. And the fact that it is the stunning Zara doing it makes it even that much more special.

This is a wonderful tutorial and photo shoot.
Zara looks great as ever.
And yes, it should be a sticky.
Well done MW.

I have found wigs lose their shine, 'bounce', softness and become dull and 'prickly' or rough after time.
Even with washing - as tutorial - I have been unable to find anything to fix this.
I have used all the 'Brandywine' wig care products, fabric softener and ordinary hair conditioner, all without success.
So far the only solution has been a new wig!
