Lynne's Green Fingers

Post by Muninn »

Some of you may know that Lynne is very handy to have around the house. She's turned her attention to DIY, and she is also pretty good at gardening. Back in spring, she was busy planting potato seeds for the year:

... and later on she got some tomatoes and peppers ready in the hanging baskets (top tip, it stops then being eaten by pests!):

Image

As we had a few hours this weekend where it wasn't raining, we decided to try and get some of the crops harvested. We've only brought in what we can manage to eat for a week or so, there's plenty more still to get in.

Lynne inspects the carrots that we grew:
"Not a bad crop, and that's not even half of them!"

Image

"One of us forgot to thin the seedlings out though, there's a lot of mishapen ones in here! Never mind, they're still edible... maybe a soup?"

Image

Lynne turned her attention to the potatoes. We dug up one of the three plots that she had sown earlier in the year:

Image

Curious as she is, she got the scales out to see how much they weighed:
"1.4 kilos, not bad for a small area. I reckon if we had turned the whole garden into a potato patch, we would have got... three quarters of a tonne!"
"Yeah, but where would you have been able to sunbathe with no lawn left?"

Image

We also managed to get a handful, and we mean a handful(!) of butter beans! There were a bit of an experiment as we weren't sure if they'd grow. We'll either chuck them in a stir fry, or dry them out and sow them again next year.

Image

Still plenty to harvest yet. We've got our fingers crossed that the tomatoes and peppers can ripen a bit more before the frosts come. We might have to put the hanging baskets in the greenhouse or inside.

So wonderful Lynne! You are beautiful and a great grower of vegetables! Maybe you could turn some of those taters into fries! ;)

Thank you all!
Lynne suggested spicy wedges for some of the potatoes. The carrots could be a challenge to cook with, most are twisted so they'll get cleaned up and the smaller/awkward ones may end up in a soup. As we don't use pesticides, there's no real need to try and peel them... if it was at all possible! Lesson learned, thin out the seedlings!

Good job Lynne.
It's great to see that the work you did in the Spring resulted in a wonderful Autum harvest.

Thanks,

Great set of pics, Lynne looks right at home in the garden. You're lucky that she likes to help out like that, wish I could get some of my gals to do the same!

It's hard to find good help these days, Muninn. It's especially nice if you find someone who shares similar interests. You've got a keeper there with Lynne, no doubt! The homegrown harvest looks like a treat, and I'll bet whatever you and Lynne decide to cook tastes great. Thanks for thinking to snap a few pictures and share them with us. Cheers!
