Idea to prevent staining - NEED HELP FROM KNOWLEDGABLE FOLKS

Post by MannyCan »

So here is my idea -

1. Buy some Smooth-On Platinum Silicone that is similar to characteristics of DS PS.
2. Mix is up an pour into a small tube.
3. Cut the cured mixture into small medallions (small circles).
4. Then use these medallions to test clothing for a few days before using it on my doll.

So by laying the PS medallions on the clothing for a few days, I can know if its safe to put that clothing on my doll without fear of staining.

I got this idea from the color post I just did.
See here:
One more DS Color Guide

The question I have from the folks in the forum is - which Smooth On Platinum Silicone product should I try that should mimic the same characteristics of my 2017 DS163+??

Any hints?
Much thanks for the assist guys.

Use psycho paint base. I just wash all clothing in hot water a few times, that seems to work. China black clothing is bad, be sure and wash at least 3 times in hot water with soap.

Washing is the secret

But don't worry as stains seem to disappear over a month

There are three types of silicone
1 acetic acid cure as one finds with bathroom sealant
2 a two part mixture in eqaul parts
3 a tupe requiring a catalyst, ratio of around 1:50 to 1:100

Probably necessary to test each.

Other solution is to by spare inserts and test with those

Even get a TPE insert and chop into slices for test sections on different clothes. TPE seems to stain more easily so will be a very relianle test

Best wishes

Thanks for the response guys - I do both of that - I wash .. and wash .. and use Retayne. But I'd like to try this idea. Even after you Retayne, I'd want to test that the Retayne worked.

Any ideas on silicone that are close to DS PS? (doesn't even have to be Smooth-On)

For prevention, I have just some general rules I follow when buying clothes or dressing my doll.

1) Some types of clothing are guaranteed to be stain suspects, including: lace, sheer, cottons, Halloween costumes / wigs, and non-stretchy polyesters. Rather than worry about testing high risk pieces, I buy satin or silk clothing including things like corsets and test them using a white cotton cloth or silicone sample / insert. Some pressure applied for a few minutes between both items will show signs of staining usually.

2) Bed sheets and hard floors hide dust and dirt, I dress all my dolls with plain white or pink sheer stockings and a pair of long socks that aren't tight along with a regular nightgown.

Silicone is nice enough to rid itself of most staining on it's own or with some help from baby oil or soap, so it hasn't been a huge issue for me lately.

Wash all dark clothing before use. Some fabrics are more likely to stain than others. Never had any staining from nylon stockings and cotton. If you get stains, they will disappear in 2-3 weeks.

Buy only tan or cocoa dolls. Then purchase only white or light colored clothing. Wash them before use.

That's a very expensive proposition MC.

Buy GOOD lingerie and whatever. I have never experienced a problem personally in more than 12 years of doll ownership.

Yep - worth testing things - thanks to Harem and Karrot. Sacrificing a spare insert was definitely the right idea!

** Note - the piece in the lower right was washed about 5 times and I even used Retayne to try to seal the color in. No luck. I'm glad I tested. **

Another method is to wash the item in a sink or bucket.
Empty the bucket and repeat until water is clear
After clothing is dry, wrap around an TPE insert and apply pressure with books for 48 hours
See what happens

Mina got her arms stained pretty bad but it was several months ago (like 6 or more) and they are still slightly blue'ish. I can't tell if stains are fading any more. Can there be permanent staining? It's only noticeable right after washing her but powder does lighten it quite a bit.

Depending on what you want your doll to wear, you could just dress her in a pair of nude/tan pantyhose first.
If the colored fabric doesn't have direct contact with the dolls skin, staining is much less likely.
And if you cut out the crotch-area of a pantyhose and cut off the feet as well
your doll can also wear one over her upper body and arms.

I usually don't wash the clothes repeatedly until they don't stain anymore, because they look used and old by then.
And I dress my dolls in pantyhose not only to prevent staining but also to make dressing in very tight clothes easier.
Life is a strange game: "The only winning move is not to play."
Yet here I am, dreaming about reality again...
