Gifs not playing!

The last few weeks I’ve noticed that when you load a gif it doesn’t play unless you click on it to open it in a larger window! It seemed to happen in the gif challenge this month but others have reported it elsewhere too!

Has this happened since the max pixel size was increased?

I have sent a pm to one of the mods who has passed it on to the powers to be..

My observations.. In the past I've posted giffs over 40 MB and they play fine as thumbnails and also when you open them..
Now I cant even get them to play at only 10 MB unless you open them up.. So for now I have given up posting as with the nature of my posts occasionally my giffs are subtle and may not even be noticed.. How many people actually open each thumbnail when they read.? I suspect not to many..

What I did notice is that is has only started happening since the maximum picture size was increased from 3600 x3600 pixels to 3840 x 3840 pixels..

Is it connected to this, let's wait and see what the guru's on the back end say.. ?

In the this month GIF photo challenge is a discussion about this problem. One GIF at 2 MB doesn't play, another at over 7 MB works. So it can't be the filesize.

Every Image with dimensions over 600x400 pixels will be rescaled to get a thumbnail picture which will be displayed as attachment. I think this rescaling fails from time to time. So just upload the GIF with a maximum resolution of 600x400 pixels and the forum must not do any rescaling an therefore cannot fail on doing this.

As OlmanOz said, most people do not load the full GIF.

That's a very good idea if your not fussed about the end quality and dont bother to open it up.. But I want the maximum size possible to maintain the best possible quality.. Picture quality is affected enough as it is inside a gif..

I'm sure there is a simple solution to this issue..

However I will say this... I LOATH UPDATES WITH A PASSION, ON ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICE... IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT TRY TO FIX IT... UPDATES ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS STUFF THINGS UP..

Phew... I feel much better now after venting that.. :haha4:

I just tried to enter the gif challenge this month and my gif doesn’t play! It needs to be seen as a gif and not as a single image first!

PLEASE get on to this as soon as possible!

I've been in contact with Nesico50, they have figured out the issue, so it is just a matter of trying to find a solution to fix it. .. please remember it was a result of a security upgrade to the website, if I an correct so better keep the site secure than leave it vulnerable and lose all our hard work. ...

FYI we are aware of this issue. The problem effects the resized versions of attachments. If you click on the inline attachment, the full-size version does animate. Also links (for instance using img600-tag) to the full-size version do animate. Links to the resized version don't animate.

We'll try to solve this, but this will take some time.

Examples:

I've just found a way to get round this for now but the quality has suffered a bit! I loaded the gif into the DollAlbum and then saved it back onto my laptop (url didn't seem to want to work!)! I could then upload that saved version which seems to play without having to click on it!

Sorry, if it seemed I was hassling everybody but I didn't seem to get any official reply as to why this was happening in the first place!

If you link to a full-size version of the GIF, attachment or Doll Album, quality should be fine. If you link to a resized version from The Doll Album, quality may be a bit less.

This issue also happened at The Doll Album and at CoverDoll, it is solved on those sites, solving it on TDF is a bit more complex.
