Sanhui 165cm 2016

Post by dallonoh »

(another) review of the Sanhui 165 - Original topic: http://www.dollforum.com/forum/viewtopi ... 57&t=69019

I know everybody wants to see photos, and they will come (it’s the main reason I bought this doll, I’m a photographer), but this post doesn’t contain any.

Although this is my first doll purchase, I’ve been around several other silicone models. I chose this doll for its looks, and the price tag didn’t hurt, either. I ordered her before George had posted his review, but I felt pretty confident from the photos that this was the doll for me. I mean, look at that butt! C’mon! Sanhui’s head designs are fantastic, and I bought two heads, #1 and #2, the same heads George used in his recent 165 galleries (https://www.flickr.com/photos/xsdolls/albums).

I may be the first large-doll-buyer in history who was pleasantly surprised at the doll’s weight, but that’s probably because I’ve spent so many years on these forums reading new owners’ surprise at how heavy their new doll is. :) The weight of this doll is manageable, in my opinion. You mileage may vary.

I agree with everything George said in his review, which you can find here (http://dollforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=257&t=68433). The doll is overly skinny, especially the arms and neck. I happen to like a bit of this exaggeration, as I think trying too hard for realism can backfire in the design. I wished for a smaller-breasted doll, and I even thought I might give her a minor breast reduction (don’t worry, I know my way around silicone). However, the proportions of the doll are more appealing in person than they were in the photos. In truth, this doll’s breasts are just about perfect.

Some of the negatives include the cast seam lines (something I’m going to repair and document), and the variance in joint tightness. Some joints (like the leg rotation) are too loose to position, while others are quite tight. I prefer the tight joints for posing in photo sessions, so I can live with the joints as they are. The eyes definitely need to be replaced, and I recommend a nice acrylic or even glass eye you can get off eBay from various supplies. See my blog (http://iboughtadoll.tumblr.com/) for links.

I have a lot of experience with casting and molding, so although I (briefly) entertained some of the TPE models, I wanted silicone if I could find the right model and price. Honestly, silicone is just so durable and easy — easy to repair, easy to customize, easy to paint — if you know what you’re doing. A good example of this is the bulging in the leg that I mentioned in my previous post. After some examination, I realized that the bulge was trapped air. I suspect that there was a small channel of air trapped in the legs between the skeleton and silicone during casting, and that after George’s (excellent) packaging and air pressure during transportation, that air collected in the least-tightly-packaged spot. A thick needle in to the skeleton, a small pop of air, and everything was good. After wrapping to try and excise any more trapped air, a small alcohol cleaning and *tiny* RTV silicone seal, and you can’t even see a hole. This is the beauty of silicone, and when you get comfortable with it, you gain confidence that you’ll be able to address any minor problem that comes up.

As for the positives, can I just say, holy crap. Seeing this doll in person is magical. I said I’ve been around other silicone dolls (never a Sanhui) before, and forgive me but I just didn’t find their design personally alluring in the way I do this doll. I know, buyer’s bias, right? You all know what I'm talking about. :) I’m just sayin’, this doll is beautiful. That's all.

More another day. I promise photos in the near future.

The pics will be slow, but here is a face pic of my 165 head #1. I hate myself for not liking this head the first time I saw photos. A couple more at http://iboughtadoll.tumblr.com.
