Has anyone tried making their own lenses?

I bought some 14mm cabochons, but they are just a bit too big. Measuring the iris' that came with my eyes they are 12.85mm

So would 12mm be the size to go for, and accept a 0.4mm gap around the outside?

Though, as I write this now, it strikes me that 1/2" would be 12.7mm which is a lot closer, and would have a 0.08mm gap.

Hey Adelea, I've actually been thinking about doing a thread on how to make your own lenses.
I also have some jigs that make it easier.

I'm using 13mm cabochons for the eyes now which are about 12.8mm actual size on average.
Here's where I get them...

I'm using a 5 minute clear epoxy now to laminate them which makes them moisture resistant.
I was using Glamour Seal but those white glue types of adhesives are water soluble and will get ruined easily with exposure to moisture.

Hi MannequinFan - what sort of washers are you using on the rears?

I bought some A2 9mm x 0.8mm washers - and they are barely magnetic. The remover tool will hold them, but a gentle shake and they fall off! The tool is also not strong enough to remove the lenses from the eye -- unlike yours, where they fly off without even needing to be touched!

Do I need "mild steel" instead of "stainless steel" ?

Hi Adelea,

The washers need to be zinc plated steel. Stainless does not work with magnets.
I'm not sure what A2 is, but it looks like you got the right size. The 9mm O.D. and .8mm thickness is correct.
Here they are just called 4mm flat washers (for 4mm screws).

Hi MannequinFan,

thanks again for the new eyes. They arrived last week. The packaging of the eyes was awesome, as if a big premium company would have sent them. I installed them immediately and they look great. For me it's important to change eye colors quick without damaging the eyelashes or the TPE material around the eyeholes. Also there is no more need to work with the cotton pads, which are used behind the original eyes. Here are some photographs of the face with those new eyes:

The head is still factory condition and next steps will be coloring the teeth and a discreet makeup...

Hey Aralor, welcome to TDF and thanks for the post and kind words! :)
I'm really glad you like them!

The center photo is my favorite - the Ana hazel (MF37) really looks great with her blonde hair.

Your eye enhancements are mind blowing. Im seeing doll posts that look unrealistic one month, and after getting your eyes, the same doll instantly looks like an actual human. For me the eyes on a person are everything.

That said I do have a question, or 2?
Im really new here and getting an rlsd 174 shortly, will yours fit in those?
And these simply snap on like contacts would due to them having a magnet?

Im not too familiar with measurements and all that stuff yet, tried looking around but there are so many pages of info since 2014 about these lol.

Hi there Jcpax & Collector! Thanks for the compliments and welcome both of you to TDF! :D

Jcpax, if your doll is TPE chances are the Easy Move Eyes™ should work. Most TPE dolls use the 32mm half round eyes and the EMEs are designed to replace those.
Yes, the eyeballs have small magnets embedded in them that hold the iris in place.
They are available through Booty Call Dolls here: viewtopic.php?f=267&t=100373

Thanks!

Now that u have movement, have u had any thoughts about automated movement ...blinking, involuntary eye movement etc? ... maybe even as simple as an offset cam setup. How stiff are the lids to close/open, and eyeball to rotate? I guess the inserts may need some redesign for that though.

More recently I was thinking about some mini actuators on the torso frame ... for "fun" but subtle hip movements and twists etc, but your good work has given me thoughts on this ... if those windows into their souls had some "life" ... Wow. I might try experiment with micro stepper motors I have in my robotics scrapbox ... that is ... when/if I get to it! At least it involves smaller "operations" than torso actuators!

  • ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!

Would they fit the RealDoll-2 ..?
The Q has probably been answered here somewhere so forgive me, just dont have the time to read thru the whole thread right now..

I have the RD2 Body-A hand painted green eyes at the moment and would love some blue ones..
Then, maybe get funky and go for some other colors!

If so.. definitely adding this to my shopping list!
    Thanks!
    Rick~
