Thanks Sotaichou!

I can also do the same colors with round human pupils.
Here's the original green eye and the Cherry Red with the round pupil.
Same colors, completely different look...

MannequinFan, if a person could use the same size factory eyeballs for dolls this technique would really be nice , to be able to change the color of the eyes so easily . it is along the same idea i had .

Hi TT,

Yes your contact lens idea is what got me thinking about this!
One of the great things about 3d printing is that I can customize the design to match any size or configuration of eyeball.
Currently I've printed these in 26mm, 29mm and 32mm. The smallest I would probably want to go with the 12mm lens would be 24mm.
And BTW, they even make glow-in-the dark printer plastic so the eyeballs could glow at night! :o

The only limitation with this idea is that in extreme closeup the edge of the lens opening can sometimes be noticed.
Probably not what a professional photographer would want for a close up photo shoot, but at the average viewing distance it's pretty hard to distinguish those details.
I think these would be a fun item for those that are wanting to experiment with different looks for their doll without spending a ton of money for multiple sets of eyes. I think the easy change would also help to preserve eyelashes and eye makeup, especially if you've put a lot of effort into creating a look.

Here's a quick video showing how the new magnet configuration works for removal of the lens.
With this new setup a magnetic pickup tool with a few disc magnets added works great for removing the lens.

Thanks TT! Yes that's my gnarly old hand, lol.
I talked to the guy at Glasseyesonline and he liked them and asked if I was selling them.
I told him I was thinking of selling them, but I haven't had any more responses from him since.

Patents are for huge companies with deep pockets that can afford to hire patent attorneys. It's very expensive to file a real patent.
You can get a patent pending by paying a small fee but it really means very little.

This is sooooo amazing. If I ever manage to get my own 3D printer, I must create some awesome eyes for Jazz, my Teddybabe.

WOW That looks great Mannequin Fan! This has some real potential, could make closed eyes full open eyes, Oriental eyes etc! We talked about this but even with my skills I'm afraid about boring out eyes on a Mannequins head and putting these in....and to have multiple sets alignment would be key! That's where a printed backing plate would come in handy as tolerances could be kept tight, then you would just mount the plate to the face blend that seam and plug magnetized eyes into that, after installing your excellent "mobile eye unit" I'm positive you could really pull this off...I'd do a prototype if you want, I think I have a spare head here.....

Thanks FG!
I like the way the magnetic eyes are working now, but I think I'm going to give it up on the eye unit thing.
I looked at it with a scan of Sammie's head and the eyelid assembly doesn't even come close to matching the face unfortunately.
The inside of a mannequin head is just too rough and uneven to make a backing plate work well. The only way I know is to completely cut out the area and replace with a matching shape like I did with Fiona, and that requires a scan of the mannequin head.

I think for a Teddybabe, a single modul with two linked eyes is too much, after some thought. It would be easier to make two separate eye modules, mirror images of each other, made so that the entire shape of the eye looks as much as the original TB eye (which differs for each TB face, Jazzi is a Tina).

And I also think that separate eyelids will probably be too much. Just paint the top and back of the eyeball in skin tone, and stick some fake lashes on the eyeball where the "lid" begins. Rotating the eyeball upwards and downwards "opens" and "closes" the eyes. Just like the cheapest version of closing eyes you see at Toys'R'Us.

Well, first I need a 3D printer.

New eye experiment!
Just ordered some super large 18mm glass lenses for some big wild cat eyes!
This is the normal 12mm lens and the 18mm lens in the 32mm eyeballs for comparison...
