Carbon Composite Skeleton Dolls

Post by DocMoriarty »

Not sure this has ever been proposed but i think the weight of especially real sized dolls could be greatly reduced by a carbon composite skeleton. It could consist of mostly hollow body-shaped segments covered with a skin (up to a few cm thick) of silicone, for example for the chest, 2 for the butt, thick hollow thigh and upper arm "bones". It would be as strong and durable as steel but extremely lightweight, not to mention that it also saves silicone weight too, especially chest, butt and thighs. I bet it would be possible to make a 140-150cm doll with under 20Kg weight. Of course thats not the cheapest thing to do. But you would really get a ferrari racing doll. What do you guys think?

I would love a doll with a CC skeleton. The conventional skeletons made with metal tubing look retro and crude.

I think that everyone would agree to this, but the manufacturing of carbon fiber is still so high that the price of those dolls would be to the roof.

You wouldn't notice the weight savings because the real weight is in the TPE.
And I bet the difficulty in fixing a carbon fiber frame is a tad more as well so don't give the manufacturers any ideas!

For bigger dolls the weight is in the TPE / Silicone and this is why a carbon composite skeleton would reduce weight a lot when done right, because you can make "boxes" of carbon composite for the chest which are covered by 3 or 4 cm TPE/silicone and empty inside saving a lot of weight. Same for thighs and pelvis perhaps.

My LunaC, 130 cm is about 1/2 skeleton and 1/2 "flesh" weightwise. Even there it would save a lot of weight still, prolly getting her to 14-15Kg instead of 19.

A carbon composite skeleton is virtually impossible for a number of reasons. Carbon components have to be designed with the assistance of a stress engineer, laid up on a mould taking account of direction of weave and number of layers, then baked in an autoclave oven. The only possibility is carbon tubes to replace the existing positions where tubes are found. If a force is applied to a carbon tube in a direction it wasn't designed for it will snap.
Very work intensive and too expensive for manufacturers and buyers alike.

just look at the cost of carbon fibre cycle frames. plus would you really trust these Chinese factories to manufacture such a skeleton?

Awesome idea, but not econimical to makers who want to focus on volume and quantity, rather than quality.

Cost benefit ratio, but if you get a boutique maker retailing 6 grand plus premium quality dolls with a 20 year life expectancy, then sure, CC is the way to go.

I actually thought that that work intensive process could best be made by chinese manufacturers. Also probably not the whole skeleton but some key-parts like a chest box and thigh tubes could be made from carbon and the rest classic, would probably be already quite a big weight saver.
