Hi @all,
I think I will have to do some work on the sealing / coloring at the nipples of my mechdoll (dollpark) soon.
After less than 2 months, the sealing at the tips is wearing off.
I've got some WACKER ELASTOSIL E41. It says "silicone rubber - sealing, bonding, coating".
1. May that be used (probably) - any experience?
2. What could I use as thinner? Acetone and ethanol are available. d-limone sounds a little alien here in Germany.

thx for any hints / help.
Tarli

It seems I am unlucky when it comes to original face seal and make up failure.
Either that, or no one else posts details of peeling or flaking make up seal and before & after photos.

Cami's chin started peeling / flaking fairly early after receipt. But only a small amount.
Delicately, with only the tiniest amount of adhesive, the edges of the peeling were sealed and 'matting' powder used to blend & stop shine with ever so careful dabbing just before full cure. (As instructed by the manufacturer).
It held for some time (over a year) but gradually the seal started breaking down in other places and it became impossible to maintain her face by this method.

Image

So, nothing for it but to remove all the face seal.
As with Natasha on page 1 this was done by using the thumb in a firm rubbing sideways movement. The seal came away quite easily. In some places whole sections just peeled off, in others more effort was needed and for delicate areas (such as around the eyes) I used a thinly cut tongue depressor just easing away the seal.
I also found it useful to 'pinch' some areas with my fingers and wipe away the peeled / flaked seal with a mild soap solution.

Image

It took a few days. Doing it carefully bit by bit.
The fact that the seal could come off just using the fingers is indicative that the seal had poor adhesion to the underlying silicone - hence the problem in the first place. I would suggest that if the original seal has good adhesion then removing it would be most difficult and thus not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

As before, once the seal has been removed, coloured powder make up is applied to achieve the effect one wants.
This will primarily be eyebrows, eyeshadow, lips / lipstick and cheek blush. There is a comprehensive youtube video on how to do eye lashes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPvfrhL2N8g.

Unless one has a professional artistic touch and specialised equipment and material (airbrush) and as advised by doll manufacturers, the seal of your make up is not advised.
Not least because if you get it wrong it could be a mess and very difficult to rectify if there is good adhesion of the seal to your dolls face. You would certainly not be able to use your thumb to remove it.

The best you can do is simply keep reapplying the make up as required.
The exception to this may possibly be the lips (and possibly the eyebrows) if you are absolutely sure they are OK and you are careful with the seal.

Anyway here is Cami with her new make up.

Image

Not the best perhaps as I am no artist, but certainly better than looking at a peeling / flaking face.

In regard to thinning silicone adhesive to produce a 'seal' mixture.
I have found this to be most difficult with the latest types of adhesive now being used.
So I use Permatex flowable Silicone window and glass sealer which flows for a smooth finish, takes an hour to set giving a chance to correct mistakes and wipe off, and can be applied very thinly.
This may well be an alternative http://www.itwconsumer.com/versachem-pr ... licone-136

In the photo above used only on Cam's lips - otherwise, one kiss and its smudged all over.

As always:
Practice, test and trial before working on your precious doll.

Thank you Everhard. It is still to some extent a work in progress.
As the make up is not sealed (apart from the lips) changes, however small (or large), can be made.
With all your dolls have you ever experienced similar face peeling or flaking of the seal as I have had with Natasha, Noni and Cami?
I wonder if it has something to do with the constant warm and relatively humid ambient conditions where I live.

I have not encountered the problem with any of my dolls. (However, some high-resolution close-ups of Rebecca, made in 2000, taken with a large format film camera, show surface damage to her face invisible to the naked eye. Factory paint make-up became much more durable within a few years.)

The only delamination problem is with Joanna on one side of her chin. It is visible, but not prominent. It is simply a result of abrasion. I might have to do something about it if it gets worse.

Maybe it is the climate.

One of the other options to use would be Psycho Paint from Smooth-On. It can be colored with the same dyes used to color the silicone in the skin or it can be used as a clear sealant.

What did you use as matting powder?

Great post and tutorial MUZZA. Posts like this really make TDF an informative resource for "doll enthusiasts" everywhere.

Besides the technical aspects, make up tips are always welcomed, right? What I mean is that (being male myself) I always admire a lady with a well applied make up but have no idea what all goes into doing it. Personally I have trouble picking out outfits that go together .

Keep the tips flowing fellow TDF members.

Gosh, this is a long time ago that I started this thread.
Silicones have changed a little, product availability has become more widespread and I have lost touch quite a bit since then.
But yes, Psycho paint maybe an option. I have not used it myself but Oleg of Anatomical Dolls recommended it to me some time way back.

All my dolls have had face seal peeling problems but, speaking with Everhard none of his has so I don't know if it is just luck, weather conditions, or whatever but once repaired the problem is very infrequent and indeed more difficult to fix.

As far as the matting is concerned, Synthetics sent me a small unmarked packet some years ago which I still use from time to time to take the shine off repair work. I have no idea what its product name is - sorry.
I am sure manufacturers and distributers can assist with any enquiries. Or just google 'Matting' and there is a mountain of information out there.

Well if you are using the Psycho Paint, all it is is a clear layer of Silicone so baby powder will remove the shine same as it would on any other surface of the doll.

Im applying makeup for the first time. I was wondering what you guys use? And how often you apply? Do you use brushes? if you do use brushes, how many do you own?

What about eyeliner, mascara? Can the doll even handle mascara..etc? If not which products are safer? Also can you get the mascara and makeup off, does it leave any stains? How long do you guys keep the makeup on for? Does it stain clothes, sheets, pillows. I would like to have makeup on my doll, but Im afraid of stains, on the doll and my pillows and sheets.

Does anyone use eyelashes? and eyebrow enhancing makeup products? Do people go that far?

And do those products leave stains or does it get washed off pretty easily. What do you use to remove makeup? oil free makeup liquids?

Sorry for all these questions, I am inexperienced

tyrellkao,
The best thing for you to do is have some sample silicone and practice / test different material and techniques before applying stuff to your doll.

This thread was originally about applying powder pigments to a tin silicone doll and sealing the colouring (make up) in with a flowable silicone adhesive so it is permanent aside from long term wear.
These days dolls are made from platinum silicone.

As a general rule you can apply make up to your doll exactly the same as a real girl would. But the make up just comes off and smears because silicone is not skin.

Some of your questions are curious:
Does anyone use eyelashes?
Of course. Did yours not come with eyelashes?
Do you use brushes? if you do use brushes, how many do you own?
Yes, small flat paint brushes ..... Lots ...... to apply the flowable silicone adhesive sealer and to get into hard to reach places during tear repairs.
What about eyeliner, mascara?
eyeliner is black silicone adhesive or clear silicone adhesive with black powder mixed in.
