The best references I can think of are (top) Charolette Pudding a character from the anime/manga series One Piece, and deities worshipped in Hinduism (bottom) and other eastern religious practices.
It's also used in a lot of modern "spiritualist" art that takes from eastern religions.
The eye is set in the center of the forehead typically. Either horizontal or vertical.
I imagine finding the right face for this idea would be a fun challenge, think it might be an interesting concept for a head design.
