Shoe Story ( Pt. 2 )

When we went out for Valentine's Day lunch Tom wore his first pair of brown shoes. A female customer at the adjacent table talked to us and took photo of us. Noticing Tom standing in his glass container she asked if he could not stand on his own. I replied that Tom's top-heavy body toppled him whenever he stood on his own without support. Later I realised that I had not tried standing him on his own in his new shoes.

After trials and errors I found that Tom could stand with shoes on a firm, flat, level surface. Both of us were thrilled. I decided to test with the rest of his shoes. Depending on where and which type of surface he was placed, Tom can basically stand wearing all his shoes though the length of time possible varied with individual pair. That was a major milestone for Tom albeit a given ability for his pals. All of us were very pleased. To mark the occasion other guys joined Tom in "We can stand tall on our own." display. We celebrated with tea, cake, yogurt and milkshake.

Tom did fall off often during his feats and I found that small bonsai pot-plates stabilise him and helped him stand longer. It was a big learning curve not only for Tom but also for me but totally worth it.

Shoe Story ( Pt. 3 )

Tom continues to enjoy standing independently with his new shoes, surrounded and admired by his pals. After all those shoeless and propped-up years, I could not be happier for him.

On my part I come to discover which places and surfaces are risky for falls, places where Tom can stand for hours even without the support of pot-plates and which shoes are most helpful. I find that brown, black and white shoes of the same design are most stable for him. Tom now has two pairs of those brown shoes. I also learn that pushing the soles down firmly so that they 'stick' to the surface gives Tom an uninterrupted free-standing time. Padding the inner sides of shoes also gives enhanced fit, resulting in more stability.

The whole process has been time consuming with many frustrations and lessons for me and frequent falls for Tom. But the final result is like a miracle, something that I have never thought of being possible for him.

Kens, Pichen guys and other action figures may say "What's big deal ?" But knowing our own experience I am very happy for Tom and am proud of my guy.

Maybe they were thinking of Tom?
