Isn't it great to have such flexible hands and fingers? They make for much more realistic poses. :glou:
Sandy isn’t tall (155 cm) but she has a big personality and towers over her 1/6 scale sisters. None of them will ever admit they are dolls.

Hello everyone its been a while :).
I hope you all had great Holidays ..

So if you have been following this thread you might have seen me say something about a new camera :).
Now its not a replacement for my amazing Medium Format systems I have but I am finding the sensor is amazing
with Iconic , Legendary Vintage lenses such as my Carl Zeiss Biotar 58 F2 and my 44-2 or even some of my older
radioactive Pentax lenses ..
I was just messing around testing out some of the lenses and I am starting to make myself a list of lenses that work
great on the camera ..
So far the best results have been from the 44-2 and the Zeiss Biotar and the 58mm focal distance is pretty good for
portrait stuff and still manages to hold quite sharp even at full body shots.
The lens shines more up closer for mid body shots or head and shoulder shots.
The dreamy, creamy looking backgrounds and lower F Values allow for more light and depth of field creating this almost
3d effect where the subject is there and then suddenly a sharp line around the subject that falls off into a blurred creamy mess lol.

It is often the effect that portrait shooters love to get and often getting this kind of effect using today's lenses requires you to spend
quite a bit of money for high end lenses..
Now I am not made of money so I tend to avoid spending thousands of dollars on ONE lens lol.
And often taking a beat up lens you might think is ready for the trash bin and cleaning it up (Even with permanent hazing baked between doublets or scratches)
the lenses create a look that is just not there with today's high end lenses..
And if you do not believe me keep following my thread as I will be posting just fun non edited snap shots I am taking with different iconic antique lenses ..
And trust me I have some crazy ones coming up soon..
One of I almost gave up on and tossed into the trash bin.. To fix the lens I did what would have killed many modern lenses and seriously opened a can of
lighter fluid and just started shooting it into the lens while I had it split apart into two halves ..
The severely varnished aperture system finally started moving so I could pull the lens apart without damaging the leafs ..
I figured it was either gonna eat the lens up or clean it out lol.
The end results are shocking and even with the haze between the doublet lenses I have a feeling we might be shocked at the results we get lol.

So if you like fun history about cameras and lenses here is a great article ..
Seriously I do not often post stuff like this because most of you do not care lol.
But if you like taking photos of your girls this is just worth reading period ..
The history behind photography is just mind blowing how long this has been going on and the amount of amazing gear that was created for hundreds of years
and there factory's destroyed and gone forever , Some rebuilt or reformed under new names and factories ..
From primitive Boxes with just one little lens element in the front and a button with one spring that simply flips a one leaf shutter from open to closed in what ever
speed the spring flings it, To gear driven timed delayed shutter speeds its all worth reading about and seeing just how far things have come lol..
You can appreciate your cell phones a ton more after learning camera history :).

You're the MacGyver of the photography world. :glou:
Its a old person hack lol..
I watch this older guy on Youtube and he often uses zippo lighter fluid to clean up aperture blades lol.
I just kinda went extreme and just squirted it right onto the entire aperture assembly until things started to break apart..
It was nasty and you would have not believed the black and brown colored lighter fluid that drained out each time I soaked it.
I read in that article they used Whale Oils to lubricate them back then lol.
Who knows maybe I dissolved whale oils lol.

Anyway I am about to start posting some fun photos :)

Ok so yesterday I played around just doing some basic test with the Iconic Helios 44-2.
If you read the article I posted above you will see this lens is not an exact copy of the Zeiss Biotar
but the elements inside of the lens are almost exactly the same and same distances ..
This is a common practice where companies copy another brands items but change up the outsides to
look different to avoid conflicts lol.

So yeah this lens is pretty close to an exact copy optically speaking of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm F2.
Note: Latter ill be doing a test with the real deal to compare as I do own the real Zeiss Biotar version as well.

Ok so the first images where just test to see how shallow or thin the depth of field was when using this lens on this camera..
All of these shots are shot fully open to show the full effect of what everyone raves about these lenses lol.

(Lens Test 2).jpg
(Lens Test 2).jpg (5.33 MiB) Viewed 173 times

The above image is just a very close up shot (About as close as the lens would focus) to see the focus point of the lens..
As you can see the very center of the bulb is very sharp and in focus but suddenly near the edges of the bulb go blurry and everything
behind it becomes a distorted and interesting mess lol..
Some areas of the lens you can still see the tree has contained its shape and other areas of the lens the shape of the tree is distorted
and smeared ..
In future photos in this post you will start to see the pattern of this smearing effect..
Its in a kind of circular pattern around the center part of the lens..
This is the effect people like from this lens type.
I would say its interesting and more artistic then anything in my book lol.
Also Note the angle at that you hold the camera thus shifts the angle of the lens and this is what causes the interesting smearing in
only particular areas and directions ..
One can master tilting the lens just right and getting very creative effects from the lens.

(Lens Test 3).jpg
(Lens Test 3).jpg (5.31 MiB) Viewed 173 times

Ok the above image is with the lens closed up a touch to around 2.5 or 2.8 I cant remember but just one stop closed up..
You can see the flashlight is quite sharp and holds its focus well and everything goes into a nicer more smoother blur that I personally
like better ...
But when you start to back up away from the target or have a further back background the effect is still quite noticeable ...
To increase the effect take a photo of something that has a really busy background like the tree branches above..
If you want a more smoother look try to avoid busy backgrounds and something smoother like the wood behind the flashlight and close up
the lens some..

(Lens Test 4).jpg
(Lens Test 4).jpg (4.82 MiB) Viewed 173 times
(Lens Test 6).jpg
(Lens Test 6).jpg (3.83 MiB) Viewed 173 times

The two images above are of our silly Natalie that agreed to stand still for the photos..
This test once again shows an example of how using a lens like this fully open can be a good thing or a bad thing..
As you can see in one photo I focused on the furthest eye and the closer eye is way out of focus and most of her face between.
The other photo I focused on the closer eye from the other side and the same kind of result is expected..
This means that shooting portraits with this lens fully open is probably not the best idea up close anyway..
And I was able to back up some and get decent photos but still again the depth of field was just way too thin..

(Lens Test 7).jpg
(Lens Test 7).jpg (5.99 MiB) Viewed 173 times

Above is a photo of one of the tiny girls ...
This photo was taken as close as the lens would focus and wide open once again..
If you look close you can see that I focused more in the center of her head..
I managed to get both eyes in decent focus but the left of the photos eye is starting to blur out already and I am shooting strait on so
imagine if I turned to the side some..
Also if you look at the wooden wall behind her that is only about an inch or two behind her and already its blurred quite a bit and if you
look close you can see the swirling effect around her head..
Also the bottom right of the lamp she is holding is starting to smear outwards towards the edge of the photo..

So you are saying come on John what good is this lens?
If all you are gonna do is get strange blurry images lol..
Well all is not lost if you understand how lenses work..
Below are some images with the lens closed up a touch..
The first one I think is about a stop closed up of Brandy and this is a pleasant photo with plenty of blur but yet retains a decent photo..
The last photo is a photo of Kira and this was shot around F4 and you can see the lens starts to clean up quite a bit and could pass as my main
camera almost ...

(Lens Test 8).jpg
(Lens Test 8).jpg (5.79 MiB) Viewed 173 times

Ok so as you can see even if this lens is something that people like the strange effects it gives these test prove that closing up even the most wild
lenses can often clean up there images quite a bit :).
I hope you liked the photos and the fun testing ..
More to come some other day...

But I like strange blurry images… 😜

Nice experimenting John! Is that lens you’re playing with one of those odd Russian lenses with the “swirly” bokeh? I have one of those, but unfortunately, I can’t get the effect out of it when shooting the tiny ladies close up.

Keep up the good work!

Yes I have the original Zenit E with its leather case as well..
I cleaned it up and Fixed a interesting issue it had..
I love that old camera :).

So here is the deal ...
I have watched many youtube videos and the Helios 44-2 was made by the millions I guess and I have heard some people say it can be a mixed bag from one lens to the next.
This one would probably really show it if I was outside .

Re: **John's Girls**

Post by john1972 »

Ok so its been a bit and well ill explain that..
So normally I stay home and try and do things around here but from time to time I take peoples advice
and Get Out and do things lol.
Well a friends band was playing at a local bar for New Years Eve...
I met a friend there and tried to have a decent time lol.
Well I got covid from trying to have fun lol.
Yeah im laughing but trust me it was not fun..
I have had it before but this time it was worse .
I spent the most part of 4 days in bed before I could even start feeling I was maybe gonna win the fight ..
Its been a week tomorrow and I am still hacking and blowing my nose some but at least bad stuff has past ..

But today I felt a bit better and as promised I dug out my Exakta camera and mounted what I think is the only adapter you can
really put on those lenses and its just a metal ring that you tighten on with three set screws and the ring has M42 threads on it.
The Exakta Lens mount used three or four collectible lenses ..
One of them is the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm F2 lens.
As per my last post this lens is the lens that the Helios was created to copy.
So my test results you would think beings the Zeiss is the better lens I would have gotten MORE swirls and crazy fun things...
But to my surprise things where not so.

So before I post the photos I will explain some things..
In the last test shots I did close up that lens some to get more sharper images ..
Well I can tell you the results where not what I expected at all from the Zeiss lens..
In fact the images where VERY sharp and clinical even when shooting every shot im about to post wide open at 2.0.
I got about ZERO swirly Bokeh from this lens.
Now I have shot many rolls of film in the Exakta camera this lens stays on and I can say the image quality has always been very clean
and sharp and colorful.
So I guess I am not too surprised considering how well the images are from the camera the lens was actually made for..

So the entire reasons of these test is to find fun lenses that I have around the house that create interesting results on different cameras.
So far I can say I do not see much reason to adapt this to the new camera again because honestly the lens that came with it takes just as
sharp of photos anyway and we are not really looking for just sharp photos but interesting effects and character so I can chose some of these
test lenses and do full on studio shoots with them :).

So from the two lenses I will keep track knowing the Helios 44-2 was actually quite interesting and might be a fun lens to use for a future
photo shoot :)..

Ok here are the photos and ill explain some things..

(Zeiss Lens 4).jpg
(Zeiss Lens 4).jpg (9.87 MiB) Viewed 74 times

Ok so I tried to take pretty close to the same kinda shots as the last test..
This above shot shows something interesting anyway about the lens that was different from the Helios lens..
Everything that has shine or small specs or dust even that the flash hits those spots turn into soap bubbles..
If you look close compared to the Helios that when I closed up the lens a touch it was very smooth and tasteful
the Zeiss was full of very chaotic bubbles lol.
I found it the most interesting thing about the entire test ...

(Zeiss Lens 1).jpg
(Zeiss Lens 1).jpg (11.09 MiB) Viewed 74 times
(Zeiss Lens 2).jpg
(Zeiss Lens 2).jpg (10.41 MiB) Viewed 74 times

(Zeiss Lens 6).jpg (9.83 MiB) Viewed 74 times
(Zeiss Lens 7).jpg
(Zeiss Lens 7).jpg (9.31 MiB) Viewed 74 times

So as you can see above most of the photos are just great over all photos..
Nothing that I can not get already from my good lenses..
But again the Zeiss is suppose to be one of the good lenses just from a long time ago :)..
So I guess it lives up to the name of being a great lens its just not something I would say is anything special compared to many
of my other lenses I own ..
But if this was the only lens and camera I owned I could easily take fantastic photos with it an probably no one would know the lens
could have been made before WW2.
A camera with this exact model lens most likely took photos of Hitler at some point..
Pretty crazy

Anyway latter on ill adapt yet another very old lens and see what kind of results we get..
