Viewing The Doll Album & Firewalls

Hi Folks:

I was having trouble viewing the Dollabum...would only see empty boxes. I think it was Bill who clued me into how to fix that.

I am running a Firewall (Norton) However, if I will disable the firewall I CAN see the photos. Does anynone know in Norton Firewall if there is a way to permit it to allow certain sites without having to disable it? I didn't find anything in the Firewall Options that allowed for such an exception.

Hi, Eroc!

I haven't any experience with Norton's firewall product - I run the free edition of Zone Alarm, which has never given me that kind of trouble.

I'll take a look around, though, and see if I can't dig something up.

(however, if anyone else _has_ experienced - and solved - this problem, feel free to chime in!)

<edited to add info on Norton Personal Firewall and allowing referrer information for selected sites>

Perhaps there's something here that'll help:

How to pass referer information to specific Web pages in Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003

When you click a Web page, your browser notes the current page that you are on and sends that information to the server of the new Web page. This way, the server for the new Web page knows the last Web page that you viewed. For example, if you are on www.symantec.com and click www.microsoft.com, the browser sends www.microsoft.com the information that you are currently viewing www.symantec.com. If you block referer information, the server of the page you are requesting to see does not know what page you saw last. By default, Norton Internet Security (NIS) and Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) blocks this information. However, some Web pages require this information before allowing you to view the page. If you need to allow referer information to pass to a particular Web page, you must create a rule for it.

To create a rule:

1. Open NIS or NPF.
2. Click Options.
3. Click Internet Security or Personal Firewall. This step is not always needed.
4. Click the Web Content tab.
5. Click Add Site. A new site/domain box appears. Enter the name of the site that you want to receive the referer information and click OK. In this example, it will be www.symantec.com.
6. The site name appears in the left frame of the Options window.
7. Click the name of the new site.
8. Click the Global Settings tab.
9. In the "Information about visited sites" section, uncheck "Use default settings".
10. Click Permit.

11. Click OK to close the Options window.

This is an explaination of why the Doll Album images will only show the broken image "X" icon. The text below is from our Doll Forum FAQ:

Why can't I see the Photos in the Doll Album?

If you can not see the images when you go to the doll album, it is because you are running firewall software OR your browser's security is set TOO HIGH (this is a default in the newer IE installations).

You will need to TURN DOWN your security settings a little. The reason for this is that the browser "tells" the server where the page or image request originated from. With the security turned up too high, the server is not given this information and will refuse to provide the image.

This is the result of the security we have running on the doll album to avoid the hacking, and unauthorized linking to images (which has been a problem).

We suspect that this will be encountered by a few users, and we'd would appreciate it if folks would help make others aware of this fact when needed. (Thanks!)

HINT: If you see a broken image below:

then you need to adjust your security settings.

Since the above procedure for Norton appears to solve the problem without reducing security across the board, perhaps it should be added to the FAQ. Once someone has verified that it actually works for the doll album, that is.

I may capture it for the Darcy site, if I decide to disable blank referrer fields as the album does.

Hi Eroc,

How well meant all this advice and with respect to all those helpers, I'am almost sure that it won't help you.
I had the same shit and after an evening of try and error... I got it.
The thing that you have to do is simpe.

Click on your personal firewwall icon *that little globe like icon beside your
internet network indication* rightunder in your windows screen.

A popup appears then, here you have to select Norton Personal Firewall.

A window apears then, with a yellow menu bar.

Then select Options (with the check V sign) from the yellow menu bar.

Then a popup appears again, select Personal Firewall

Then a dialog window appears, select Advanced Options from the dialog.

Then another dialog appears, select here the Web Tab, if it is not selected.
On the Web Tab, select the Privacy Tab.

On the privacy tab is a box Browsing Privacy, in this box, the drop down box Referer must be selected. Select here the green circle, Permit from this drop down box.
Click OK to commit the shit.

Good luck boy, after this you will be able to see the doll album, because now the firewall permits the referrer that Ihstaria has installed to prevent the consuming of bandwidth by people who link to the images in the doll album.

Well, thanks folks for all your attempts at assisting. Unfortunately none of them work..Neither Pale's nor Mytime (for which I thank your for Your time!). So far only turning off the firewall for the time I wish to view the album works. So be it....I'll just have to Guerilla View it!

Hi Eroc,

One thing I forgot, have you in the Norton Personal Firewall Advanced Options Dialog set the Referer to permit *the green circle in the listbox* while in the treevieuw left in this box, the section "defaults" was selected?
If not then referer works only for the site selected in the treeview.

Strange. Firewall is the cause of your trouble that's clear, but when I set referer on for all sites, everything worked. I'am using Norton Personal Firewall 2002 on Win'98 secondary edition.

cannot see dollalbum photos

Hi,

I've been trying to access the dollalbum photos for quite some time now. I've read past posts outlining how Norton firewall settings may be the culprit.

What if you are using ZoneAlarm as the firewall? I'vve tried to change settings, but still cannot see photos.

Can anyone assist me in lowering the shields?

Thanks.

Hi, Guys!

I'm running the freeware version of ZoneAlarm, with Internet Zone security settings at "High - Stealth Mode". I've never had a speck of trouble viewing Doll Album photos, except for the prohibitive 56k download times.....

(I know this info isn't all that useful in and of itself - but perhaps it'll help _someone_, somewhere down the line...)
