For human hair wigs, washing every ~3 months is fine unless you need to keep it looking pristine for pro photography. For synthetic wigs, I just try to comb them until they look decent enough; otherwise, it is time to trash it and buy a new one. Synthetic wigs are cheap & usually better to just replace when it gets worn out.
