Gelantin

Hi there, what your are talking about is called gelatin. In the old days it was indeed used for making molds. Gelatin is made from collagens, a substance which can be isolated from animal skin. The characteristics of gelatin is that it can absorb a lot of water and build up a gel (thats where the na...

The Point is, that oil is a very suitable point to start from to synthesize anything. It is a shame that this valuabel material is wasted simply for heating or producing electricity. But chemist also can use other educts to make polymeres etc. One can use simply carbon (acetylene respectively which ...

Hi Sly! PUR is polyurethane, right? Right. And when I see companies talk about their "urethane foams" (e.g. a "cold foam" product I saw), they're really talking about the same thing, right? Right. Usually they heat the foam while curing. But that needs special equipment. Most peo...

but wait... Is it possible to use silicone in a silicone mold? No, it isn't. But you can to what I did vice versa. Just use elastic polyurethane (PUR) for the mold, and than you can use silicone for the cast. It should be just that simple. But I had reasons because I decidet to use a flexibe mold i...

Welcome! :-)

Hi Slimpleton! Nice avatar by the way :-) Mytime mentioned my project, but I have to correct him as I switched to PUR foam while making my "material research" studies. I actually build two dolls made from silicone, but not from the fine soft medical quality silicone, but some kind of silic...

It depends ao the silicone. I tried acetate cureing silicone seal and thined it with ethyle acetate. But you have to becareful, the solvent can corrode the surface (e.g. the paint) that you intend to mold! One other thing is that the added solvent is evaporating and therfore the thined silicone will...

Hi! The skin is not foam, but an elastic PUR polymer. Usually it is used to make molds. It is elastic, like silicone. It has no bubbles. It's soft... somewere between silicone and latex. More like silicone. But since It is a thin layer of about 2-3 mm it has not the same felling as silicone. You can...

Have fun,

Small update

Hi Folks, I just wanted to say, that there is a small update reagarding the progress of my doll. I just finished the casting of an "experimantal" head. I molded a head the same way as I did with the whole mannequin to experiment with the materials to learn about their properties and the di...

Hi! I don't get the big picture, but I saw the discussion about Harry' fabouous doll. Unfortunately there is so much to read in this forum, that I don't have the time to read everything. It makes me sad, to have read Ish's statement. Maybe, as a suggestion to the administrators, be more consequent i...
