Powdering Aid

Post by WYPirate »

My RD2 Sandra Kay is still a bit tacky, so I've been powdering her with J&J 100% Pure Corn Starch Baby Powder. I've been using my hands, which in it's own right is a very nice experience, but for photography, my hands lay down a rather un-even layer, and it shows up on digital media. I have found a handy tool for powdering one's doll. I went to the local Sprawl-Mart and in the auto-care section, found a microfiber car-wash mitt. Here's an example of the model I'm using:

It has hundreds of little microfiber "villi" on it that do a great job of evenly applying powder. Much like the giant puffs Gam-gam used years ago. The villi retain some of the powder as you smooth, pat, and buff it on, so you use and waste less. With that, if dolly needs an occasional touch up, a little pat and you're good to go. JUST BE SURE TO RUN IT THROUGH THE WASH CYCLE FIRST! I took mine right out of the packaging and used it on Sandra, and she was not too pleased with all the blue lint I left all over her body. She and I got in the shower and I made it all better.

Hope this helps! :D

Thanks for the post, I'll have to try it. For photos, I've always washed the powder
off, for the other reason that the powder gets on the clothes and makes a mess.
Gee, I've never tried "in the shower"

I'll vouch for that type of brush/applicator too. I've been using that type for quite a while. Its very effective and hardly spills any powder.

I've heard a great way to powder a doll is to use what is basically a "rosin bag", like baseball pitchers use. This is simply a cloth bag with powder in it; baby powder in our case (don't use rosin! 8O  ). Just pat it on the clingy parts. I'm going to make one of these myself.

Hey guys! This is my first post so bear with me on this OK?
For powdering my dolls I have recently found that using my hands first...
and the wiping down gently with a soft 'cotton' cloth or towel works wonders.
Great for photos. Also, yes, a make-up brush is a necessity for the face.
Especially around the eyes. I use an all natural bristle Angled Blush Brush.
Wonderful!
Cheers!

This has been bothering me for a while and I'd like to clear it up.
I realize it's been a long time and probably long forgotten but I have to do this...

Those are not my guitars and I apologize for misleading anyone. (The doll is Jessie, my Boytoy.)
I am sorry that I did not reply to MrCurious' post. I was still a Newbie and embarrassed.
That avatar was created for me, very kindly, by Bianca and I appreciated the help.
Soon after that, I changed it to what you see now.
This guitar is mine.
It's a Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul SG , an exact, hand made copy of the original 1964 SG.
Thank you.

I use a powdered sugar hand-held sifter to powder my DaKota. It can be purchased at any dollar store for well, a dollar. While holding the bowl of the sifter in my hand, I pour the baby powder into it. Then gently shake a bit of the powder through it onto my hand (for the legs, arms, and head). My doll isn't as large as an RD, but even so, I can feel the areas I miss by doing it by hand, and I get the extra good feeling of giving her a proper rub down (hey, it can be a chore, so why not enjoy it?).

IF YOU CAN,get a clear bag big enough for the doll. put the powder in a fine threaded sock and tie it off. when you tap it against the doll powder falls thru. also if you powder them in the clear bag with your arm inside you can cloud up the inside of the bag nicely without clouding up your room . I don't think that this task is difficult.
Meso has the right idea.
Please recall my first post as a Newbie:

I have been powdering silicone dolls for a long time. Jenny for over 6 years!
I have tried multiple methods but none as complicated as what I'm reading in this topic.
I've had my best success by hanging the doll from her neck hook in a doorway, or from the ceiling, and using the procedure I outlined in that post (above).
I either put some powder on my hand or on the doll itself, depending on the area of her body that I am working on.
I use my hands because it gives you a way to really get great coverage and consistency.
You can rub it in and get between the fingers and toes... and it feels good too!
The soft cotton cloth 'wipe down' removes the excess powder residue and makes her skin super soft and smooth.
If done carefully, very little falls to the floor or stays in the air.
Obviously you do her neck first and work down to her toes.
I do her face while she's lying in bed. It's much easier to see what you're doing and get a nice result.
I last did Jenny this past Sunday morning. Total time for a full cleaning with 91% alcohol and powdering was about 1 hour.
Good luck.
