Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Tried out some of the new, softer silicone toys. The interior is almost as realistic as tpe, and the exterior is much less icky than the homemade stuff. So, if I ever decide to get a life-size doll I'm going with silicone, and making my own tpe inserts *if* I have a safer way to remelt the tpe. I'm ...

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Annie doesn't have any bones, her skeleton is made of a type of plastic which is compatible for overmolding with recycled tpe/tpr. I wouldn't advocate anyone trying this at home, due to the incompatibility with polyurethane which is ubiquitous in all sorts of household products, including floor cove...

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

TPE is two kinds of a fire hazard. If you purchase or use tpe products, I recommend a kapok mattress, or water bed.

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Not doing anything innovative with Annie/Fannie these days, but I still have the mold, and I'm refining the techniques developed in this thread. Having fun dealing with hip-bone pokes, and misaligned tail bones. Safety first, last, and always, no matter how long it takes to melt the plastic. I only ...

Annie is still hanging in two pieces in the craft room. I tried to strengthen her pubic bone by coating it with pvc glue, and weakened it instead. Fannie, on the other hand, is still keeping me company. She may be late, but she's not a complete dummy! :D

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

I'm glad her abdominal wall collapsed, because judging by what
happened to the insulation I would have been in for a very
shocking experience.

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Oh, I'll still be around the inventors corner. I just won't be doing anything new and different with Annie. She was at her best with the two part 'exsert' system. Trying for a seamless action is what I meant when I was talking about not having the right equipment and training. Here, have a look at a...

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

The fireball from the material safety test that I did last November was a real wake-up call. Annie was a lot of fun over the last two years, but I think it's time for me to sit back and take stock. I've concluded that I don't have the proper tools, equipment, or training to do the job right. I'm gla...

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Couldn't get the heating element out intact. Quit smoking for 24 hours and
found out my craft room, which I thought smelled like Martha Stewart's
living room, smells like a bus garage. It's a mess. I need to clean it.

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

It's funny the plastic bones and bungee cords came through being immersed
in hot tpe just fine, but the insulation on the heater wire turned to powder.

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Thanks, puma uma. But then I screwed up the shot. I've almost got her back to where I can
work on her, but the heating element may be a total loss.

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Annie gets plastered. After filling the mold and letting it set for two days, I split it along that orange piece of a soap box. The plastic pillows that I put in to make it lighter also made it more fragile, on the smaller side of the mold, especially. I wasn't surprised it broke in a couple of plac...

Re: Building a doll on top of a plastic skeleton.

Luckily, the standoffs for the screws (that hold the spine together) make an excellent tie point for the bungee cord that now holds Annie's pelvis and lumbar region together. This worked so well that I decided to do the connection between her head and neck the same way, and fixed her broken shoulder...
