Introduction

Hi everyone! Zedoh6 here.

Have you ever struggled with your photography?

Perhaps you're overwhelmed. There are so many concepts to grasp that you don't know where to start.

Or maybe it's the opposite... You've been at this for a while and you feel like you're falling into a predictable routine— a rut.

Let's discuss a creative technique that can help!

The View

Photography is special because it allows us to freeze a moment in time, squash it flat and share it with others.

Creative photographers can exploit the unique traits of the media to present the world in delightful ways.

Here are some lovely examples of ordinary subjects made extraordinary through creative changes in viewpoint:

Camera angle
Attachment:

Image cropping
Attachment:
0431.jpg

Distorted point of view
Attachment:
27cf5737-36d9-4195-abf3-47e30e6f804f.jpg

I can change, you can too!

Beyond the examples above, there are many other ways to "change your view" while taking photos. For example:

✿ Zoom in and out with your feet instead of the camera. Moving may reveal more interesting angles and shots.
✿ Do you always use studio lighting? Try working in natural light.
✿ Shoot in the daytime? Try working in low level light.
✿ Process in color? Try working in black and white.

Discover new photographic opportunities within your regular routines. Give yourself permission to fail. Try something different and see where it leads you. Perhaps you'll discover something that will bolster your creative toolkit. Who knows, you may even develop a new approach to taking pictures!

Myths

"I need better gear to take better photos."

Henri Cartier-Bresson created beautiful images.

Your old cell phone has a more advanced camera in it than anything Henri would have used during the 1930's.

Find creative ways to use what you already have... Remember— YOU are the most vital component to your art. Let's help you advance as an artist, the gear can come later!

"My surroundings are too ordinary to be interesting. If I knew how to use photoshop, I could take my images to the next level!"

Sure, novelty can be interesting, but there is so much beauty nestled in the mundane! We must train ourselves to see it and practice our craft so we can reveal it to others.

For example, did you know you could win an outer space themed photo competition using nothing but a head, a neck pillow and a salad bowl?

Hee hee. Now, go out there and have some fun!

Assignment

Using your doll(s) and the everyday environment of your surroundings, take a photo in which you have "changed your viewpoint" to craft a more compelling image.

(Downblouse / upskirt photos are obvious reactions to the above assignment. You are welcome to explore those avenues, but try to give your work more creative consideration than a creepy guy at a bus station.)

Rules:

✿ Photo must be shot & processed by yourself, not taken before July 2018, and not posted on TDF before.

✿ One photo entry per member for this category. Members may participate in other contest categories, but are not allowed to use the same photo for multiple competitions.

✿ Your entry into this category may contain any mixture of one or more adult dolls of any type acceptable on TDF

✿ Partial doll nudity (breasts, buttocks) is acceptable. Explicit visibility of genitals is prohibited.

✿ Please keep Photoshop/image editing to a minimum. Color processing and blemish / stand / hanging kit removal acceptable.

✿ Do not break any TDF rules regarding photos, and also comply to The Doll Album AUP (Acceptable Use Policy).

✿ List the names of all dolls used and include a photo title with your submission.

This month's challenge will run until Tuesday, August 28th. Please submit your entries by this date.

Voting will open ASAP on the 28th when the Poll is completed and will run 3 days until Friday, August 31st.

The top three winners (including any ties) will be announced sometime after the poll closes.

Love the theme.

More than that.....love the thread intro. BRILLIANT and so true.

IMO every aspiring photographer should read your intro for this thread.

Though I must say....I am in SHOCK that those are the items you used for that photo last month, BRAVO! Then again, I used aluminum foil and a shopping magazine I normally just throw away for mine, lol.

Congrats on the win last month, it was an absolutely brilliant photo and well deserved IMO.

I may take my time with this category this month, to try and come up with something new. I am always willing to try new things for sure in photography (like my blacklight entry a few months ago in the hoodie contest)

hmm while typing I just thought of something I might do.

Thank you for the inspiring words!

I'm happy to see people getting excited about this month's challenge!

If anyone is looking for a place to start, try small scale shooting experiments... Something that will let you play with your camera, lighting or technique without a huge logistical / fiscal / time commitment.

For example, here are some things you can do with a wine glass. Total time: 5 minutes. No fancy schmancy photoshopping tricks:

You can capture amazing effects with glass, water and light. There are many artists who devote their lives to studying this.

It would be fun if people shared their experiments along the way!

Evening,

I like this idea, will have to do a few sets to get something that really pops.

Ianthe in “allure”

How it fits the theme:
It’s been more than two years since I’ve photographed her in anything other than a lying down position. She’s sitting for this one. She’s not a standing model, but it’s progress!
She’s sporting new makeup for the first time, dark red lipstick and heavy eye shadow, as well as a new outfit, giving a new perspective of Ianthe.
Is it a down blouse photo if she's not wearing a blouse? She's covering up her assets for the camera, not well mind you, but more than she has at times in the past. 8O

Editing:
    Increased contrast a little.
Shot in RAW and saved as JPG.

Welcome, Jack & Ianthe... Thank you for starting us off!

What a lovely makeover. It sounds like you tried out a lot of new things during this shoot. Congratulations!

Your breakdown was very informative. This will be helpful to others.

I was so torn on which photo to use, ugh.

One, I love the lighting of, the other (the one I am posting) more fits the theme and I love the effect.

Going to post the other in my un-submitted thread. This is one time where I wish I could do more than one entry :haha4:

Things I did different:

No wig...I have only ever posted a few shots without a wig, and call me weird, but I think Arabella still looks gorgeous without a wig.
Shooting through an item (my eyeglasses). I don't recall ever doing this, but it made for a really cool in focus/out of focus close/far away kind of double exposure.

Editing done: Crop and upped clarity a tad and darkened a bit also.

Hi DB & Arabella!

Effective use of sub-framing to generate a surrealistic mood, enhanced by Arabella’s striking look.

The horizontal lines break up the predictable forms within the image while also providing a stabilizing background.

You made wonderful creative decisions in this image.

Thank you for pushing us out of our comfort zones zedoh6, Great theme. Genius really.

I am early in my photography learning curve (less than 6 months) and I am already stuck in ruts and habits. This challenge helped me to see that. This will be my first challenge entry with a Photo Shopped image. I have had my copy of Photoshop Elements for a few months and it sits here unused. I had it in my head that I needed to master the fundamentals of the exposure triangle and studio lighting before I move on to post processing of the images. Time for me to admit that mastery of the fundamentals isn't a definable finish line or target and just an ongoing process that will never end.

With this photo I used the conversion to black and white with a color pop. Endless used this affect in the June , Cat B, "What a Beach" challenge with stunning results and I decided to dust off my Photoshop program and play around a little.

Hello, Metricnut & Maddie!

It's exciting news that you were inspired to experiment with post processing!

The limited color palette, high contrast and strong diagonal elements work in concert to create a dynamic image.

I appreciate how the desaturated effect reserves a quiet space for the shadow tones to gather, allowing the red / orange hues to accentuate Maddie's face and hands.
