Painting Dolls

No matter how great your camera might be, it is how you apply your skills that makes the difference between an OK shot and a great shot. Here you can talk technical, talk creative, share your techniques, lighting, and digital editing. This is where we can all help each other to take better photos.
If you post a photo here and are looking for a critique, you should be prepared for honest criticism even if it hurts. It will only help to make us better photographers.

Thanks for your kind comment. I’ve also enjoyed seeing your Mia and what you’ve done with her! Great fun to see what can be done outside simple photography.

I tried MyHeritage AI, and I like what they’ve generated, lots of options, some better than others, but still prefer to do them myself. These have all been done with Photoshop and some older filters from Topaz, and the makeup done with Portrait Pro.

I will always admire a quality photograph, knowing how much work it takes. But sometimes it’s a challenge to let your subject ‘be all she can be’ with a bit of fantasy or whimsy thrown in.
Well, i was asking myself "are those real drawings from someone?!"...
So, are you using a photo as a base and modify it, or are you creating those out of thin air?

Thanks for commenting. I wish I had the talent to draw these! Sadly, no.

The photos are a base, then I apply various photo filter apps within Photoshop to blur out the backgrounds and ‘paint’ the images. Makeup is added via Portrait Pro, another app outside Photoshop. Takes maybe an hour to get them where I’m satisfied with them.

Nice work. Dolls make perfect subject for painting. I've used Portrait Pro as well almost always to good effect.
Sandy isn’t tall (155 cm) but she has a big personality and towers over her 1/6 scale sisters. None of them will ever admit they are dolls.
For more photos of Sandy and her sisters check out their thread: "Sandy's Enchanting World" in the Eye Candy forum.<viewtopic.php?t=154188>

Thanks! Glad you like them. Dolls make terrific models and never complain, unlike the flesh and blood variety. And they work cheap, lol.

Portrait Pro has the tendency to change the shape of the face, so you have to remember to keep it set to ‘original.’ Beyond that, it’s a fun program and helpful with lighting and makeup, especially for TPE, which I find hard to capture well.

I really love the texturing in these. I'm working on something with oil/acrylic paint myself for a friend and his doll here on the forum atm, and think I'll be referencing these a bit too for the style 👍

Thanks, Canvas. Glad you’re enjoying these and pleased you can find them useful. My art teachers in school long ago just shook their heads and passed me out of pity. ‘Hopeless’ was the term I believe they used.

Give me a real brush and some paints, and it’s clear those long-ago teachers were right, lol. I envy your ability in that direction.
