How I got a clean cut for removing a limb

Post by MourningWood »

Bought a cheap broken doll, legs were busted and not worth repair. Figure I’d make a torso doll and came up with a cheap solution that turned out great.

I used a hose clamp and fishing wire leaders, though could probably use any type of thin metal wire.

Tightened clamp around limb used as a guide for wire. Pulled wire ends up and down, and it sliced through the TPE perfectly. The skeleton I just cut through with a hacksaw.
*I don’t recommend rotary tools as it could bind up in the TPE cause a risk to yourself and the doll.

Was it easy to pull the wires with just arms strength?

By using plastic or foam cutter tools you can produce a smooth seam.

The blue tool set also include a hot wire extension which would be the best solution for this job.

I guess I would have tried use a thin E String 0.08 gauge from an electric guitar and creat a loop around the limb and pullfrom both ends, this string is so thin so it would cut as it was butter. I think it would make a perfect cut .
Same technique I saw they use to cut big Parmesan cheese in perfect cuts.

The tool that worked for me the most is heavy duty kitchen shears. I tried hot wire (until someone told me the fumes might be toxic and that TPE is flammable...). I tried razor blades. Nothing gave such great cuts as kitchen shears...

True, it is really flammable. Years ago, I did molding work in a small oven outside.. and it just blew up and the oven was on fire :)

So it's better to do the molding with tpe paste..
