A Solution To Doll Lifting And Moving

Post by bluffview »

Well I received my doll in March of this year and I have yet to do anything with her. My wife had to help me get her out of the box and eventually hang her. She just hung in the closet for 7 months. The problem is her weight. I knew when I ordered her she would be 74 lbs; but I cannot lift her. I have some buyers remorse for this. Anyway I read some guides with tips on how to mover her. Even watched a YouTube video on how to move. These younger guys even had trouble moving the dead weight.

So I thought about it for a couple of months and came up with a solution to move her without using my back at all. I made a custom doll rack that allows me to roll her around and raise and lower her as needed.

It took a couple of iterations but the above works well. The first version I hung the doll centered between the upright bars but quickly realized I could not put her on chairs or the edge of the bed because the vertical bars hit the item. Thus I created the offset or cantilevered version. The original base was designed to be able to roll into a traditional closet (US). The original upright (5/8" Unistrut) with the cantilever worked but seemed it could become unstable. So I replaced the uprights with 1 5/8" Unistrut; much better. We decided to not use a closet for storage so I made the base a little wider for more stability. The power winch carries 120 lbs with single line.

Sable in the stand to be moved. Note there is a 360 degree swivel connector between the winch and the S hook.

Preparing to put Sable in a chair to watch TV with me. I pre-position the arms and legs before lowering her. Note one side of the base is open to allow the stand base to go under furniture and straddle furniture legs.

The winch was $96.00 Amazon
Steel and connectors ~$150.00 Home Depot Unistrut in electrical section
Swivel wheels ~$16.00 Home Depot
Heavy duty shelf support ~$10.00 Home Depot For the cantilever

I used a hacksaw to cut the steel, just takes a couple of minutes.

I am making this design available to anyone. I have more pictures that show the details I can post if needed. I hope is saves someone else's back.

Cheers!

That looks cool, heck the weight is the only reason why I haven't bought a taller doll. I hope WM quickly releases their light weight dolls.

This is amazing Bluff thank you so much. Wanting to make something like this. Would be perfect for Zelex dolls, sooo heavy but lifelike and inexpensive because little or no weight reduction. Maybe I can get the 97lb 170cm after all...

This is an excellent project. I wonder though, could this be scaled up to support something as heavy as 130 pounds or around 60Kgs? I know the winch only went up to 120lbs but that could be upgraded - what about the frame however?

Awesome. Love Unistrut, can pretty much build anything with that system.

Very impressive. I will be doing something similar in the near future. I had not considered the winch. I was just going to use the rolling rack to get her about the house more easily. Thank you for sharing!
