How to make a doll look alive...

No matter how great your camera might be, it is how you apply your skills that makes the difference between an OK shot and a great shot. Here you can talk technical, talk creative, share your techniques, lighting, and digital editing. This is where we can all help each other to take better photos.
If you post a photo here and are looking for a critique, you should be prepared for honest criticism even if it hurts. It will only help to make us better photographers.

How to make a doll look alive...

Post by I like blondes »

Perfecting lighting makes the photo. The rest is icing on the cake. What's the most important thing about lighting?

One word... catchlights. They say that the eyes are the window to the soul. Catchlights bring life to a doll.

1. What’s a catchlight?
A catchlight can add dimension not only to the eye, but to the entire story (or portrait). They can add depth to the subject in unexpected ways. Read more in the article below.

I use water based lube in the eye sockets to facilitate easy adjusting. The lube doesn't completely dry, but looks a bit dull after a little while. I use a wet q-tip to wash the surface of the eyes before shooting which adds a touch of realism, or so I convince myself.

I also coat her irises in a 50:50 mixture of "Pledge with Future Shine" and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Apply with a saturated cotton bud and leave ~10 minutes to set up. They'll shine back at you no matter how low the lighting, even through a pair of sunglasses:

If you want a wet look eye shine use car wax .rub on with a Q-TIP let it dry buff out with a clean Q-Tip.The shine will last for weeks the last time I used Meguires spray ceramic car wax, worked great, safe for plastic. Its dust resistant and a gentle buff will even buff of finger prints from adjusting eyes.

I agree with the lighting perspective.
Lighting is important - especially with the eyes. I use Johnson’s baby oil with a q-tip to dab the eyes.

Here’s another tip for everyone......

I've had bad luck with lip gloss. Does this set up and actually dry onto the TPE? Love to give it a shot if so.

Totally trying that car wax trick. Awesome idea.

Hi everyone,

The Clear Lip Gloss works well for just only 4 hours (just enough time for your gals photo shoot duration). Just apply another application for an extra 4 hours if you are doing a long photo shoot.

Eventually - the lip gloss will dry out and be absorbed by the TPE material for those hours. That’s how chemistry works.
